CLEVELAND – The final LEARFIELD Directors' Cup fall initial standings for Division III were announced on Monday morning, and the Generals earned an institutional-best 343.5 points, securing sole possession of third place.
At the top of the standings is Johns Hopkins with 495.5 points, followed by Middlebury in second with 348.0 points. Behind the Generals are Tufts in fourth with 305.5 points and Emory rounding out the top five with 303.0 points. The final fall standings for Division III will be updated after the Stagg Bowl on January 5, where Mount Union and North Central will face off in Houston.
Directors' Cup points are awarded based on each institution's performance in up to 18 sports in NCAA postseason competition, with points distributed across nine men's and nine women's sports.
Washington and Lee had five programs compete in the NCAA postseason this fall, marking a historic season for the Generals. Women's cross country achieved a program-best finish at the National Championships, placing 8th overall in its second team appearance to earn 70.5 points. The men's cross country team also recorded its best-ever team finish, placing 21st and contributing 53 points.
Women's soccer advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2006, earning 64 points. The volleyball team experienced unprecedented success, reaching the final site and advancing to the Round of Eight, for the first time in program history, contributing 78 points. Meanwhile, the men's soccer team reached the Division III semifinals for the third time in four years, earning an institutional-best 83 points.
Within the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), the University of Lynchburg sits in 19th place with 214 points. Shenandoah University (84 points), Randolph-Macon College (64 points), and Virginia Wesleyan University (50 points) round out the conference's institutions, all finished inside the top 100.
The Directors' Cup has been awarded since the 1995-96 season, and the Generals have finished in the top 50 an impressive 17 times, including each of the past eight years it has been compiled.
W&L's fall teams combined for an 89-20-7 overall record, winning conference championships in women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball. The Generals posted a stellar 38-5-4 record in league matchups. The winter update for the Directors' Cup standings will be released in March.
