LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team celebrated senior day with a 2-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University in an ODAC contest on Saturday afternoon at W&L Turf Field.
Prior to the match, the Generals (11-6, 5-3 ODAC) honored their five seniors for their contributions to the program. W&L's performance was highlighted by two goals from senior forward Betty Boatwright, while goalkeeper Julia McDonald notched her seventh shutout of the season with four saves.
The senior class of 2025, consisting of Louise Strawn, Maddy Duggleby, Jenna Bernstein, Charlotte Jennings, and Kate Ruffin, has made a significant impact on the Washington and Lee Field Hockey program. Their leadership and dedication were celebrated before the 2-0 victory over the Marlins. Together, these Generals have achieved a collective 57 victories and in ODAC play, they have compiled a 27-6 record. The five helped the team secure two ODAC Championships in their first two years here in Lexington and earn back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Regional Semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1:22 – W&L – Betty Boatwright opened the scoring with an early goal, assisted by senior Louise Strawn on the right side of the goal, giving the Generals a 1-0 lead.
- 19:17 – W&L – After back-to-back saves from VWU, Boatwright struck again with an unassisted goal off loose-ball rebound to extend the lead to 2-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
- W&L outshot Virginia Wesleyan 15-9, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Generals earned two penalty corners, while the Marlins had five.
- Julia McDonald made four key saves for W&L to secure the shutout.
