LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team fell 4-1 to 13th-ranked University of Lynchburg in an ODAC contest on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.
Despite a strong defensive effort from goalkeeper Julia McDonald, who made six saves, the Generals (8-5, 2-3 ODAC) were unable to overcome Lynchburg's (11-2, 4-0 ODAC) relentless attack. The Hornets capitalized on penalty corners and extended their lead in the second half after W&L pulled within one goal in the second quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 2:43 – Lynchburg – Olivia van Metre opened the scoring with an unassisted goal to put the Hornets up 1-0.
- 23:58 – Lynchburg – Maddie Schuchter doubled the lead with an assist from Madison Mark.
- 26:32 – W&L – Margaret Cover scored off a pass from Betty Boatwright to cut the deficit to 2-1. Boatwright maneuvered past two defenders, creating a 2-on-1 break with Cover to her left. After dodging the Lynchburg keeper, Boatwright sent a perfect pass to Cover, who was positioned at the left post and easily buried the shot with no defenders in sight.
- 47:22 – Lynchburg – Callie Short extended the lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal in the fourth quarter.
- 50:10 – Lynchburg – Madison Mark capped off the scoring with a goal assisted by Anna Dorrestijn.
