Wrestling Takes Third at Budd Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team went 4-1 over the weekend at the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College and took third place in the tournament out of 16 teams. Since W&L's first appearance at the Budd Whitehill Duals in 2019, W&L's third place finish is the best in program history.

For the third time in four years, the Washington and Lee University wrestling team posted a 3-0 record on the first day of the Budd Whitehill Duals to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday.

Senior John Ryan Sedovy won in overtime of the 285 bout in the third place match to take down ODAC foe, No. 18 Roanoke, and secure a 23-18 victory for the Generals to bring home the hardware. 

In the first bout of the day for W&L, the Generals fell 31-13 to No. 7 Stevens in the semifinal round.The semifinals match was highlighted by a pair of wins over nationally ranked wrestlers: Mark Troni downed No. 13 Harrison Hinojosa (Dec , 5-0) in the 165 match and Harrison Kelly posted a 9-5 decision over No. 14 Stefan Major in the 174 class. 

In the third place match, Roanoke scored 15 quick points after posting a win by forfeit (125 lbs), a fall (133 lbs), and 7-6 decision (141 lbs). The Generals then won the next four match-ups, three by decision and the streak was capped by a Harrison Kelly technical fall to bring the Generals within one point, 15-14, in favor of the Maroons. At the 184 slot, Roanoke won by decision just before sophomore John Santowski won by injury default to go ahead, 20-18. 

In the dual-deciding bout, RC's Brady Elswick and Sedovy were neck-and-neck for all of regulation, each just scoring off escapes after both choosing bottom between periods two and three. Sedovy then recorded a take down to win in the first overtime period for a 4-1 victory that clinched the third place plaque.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lindner scored the most team points (21) for the Generals and Santowski followed with 20 points. 
  • For the team, Lindner also scored the most single match points (20) for the most total match points (76). His 76 match points was the third-most in the tournament behind Ithaca's Konrad Parker (85) and Lycoming's Kaden Majcher.
  • W&L recorded six tech falls in 35:00 flat. 
  • The Generals tied for the fifth-most team points over the tournament with 124.0 points and the fifth-most total match points with 353.
