Men's Cross Country is the Top DIII Finisher at the Spider Alumni Open

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - The No. 34 Washington and Lee University men's cross country team competed at the Spider Alumni Open hosted by the University of Richmond at Pole Green Park on Saturday. 

The Generals placed eighth, the highest finish of any non-Division I team, in a strong field with a score of 227; the individual scoring order was 38-39-49-50-51(53)(54). The Blue and White bested neighboring Virginia Military Institute, Longwood University, Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, St. Mary's (Md.), and Division II Bowie State. 

SCORING SEVEN

  • Keaton Rush was the top-finisher for W&L and placed 48th in 19:19.0 and was the top Division III finisher in the field.
  • Row Sterne followed Rush across the finish line one second later at 19:20.2.
  • The Generals then finished back-to-back-to-back 63-65, all separated by one second. 
  • Josh Fingerhut ran a time of 19:33.4 to lead the pack of three Generals.
  • One-tenth of a second later, Chris Ruiz crossed the finish line and took 64th.
  • First-year Thomas Franklin took 65th in a time of 19:34.4. 
  • Franklin's classmates, Jackson Kodenski and Wyatt Benjamin finished 68th and 69th, respectively. Kodenski ran a time of 19:43.4 and Benjamin crossed the line at 19:44.1 to round out the scoring seven.

THE FIELD

  • The University of Virginia won the 6k event with a low score of 20; the Cavaliers took first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh. 
  • Yasin Sado took the top time in 17:59.3 for UVa. 
  • Georgetown(59) and Richmond(119) took second and third place, respectively. 
  • Fourteen teams and 173 individuals competed in the race.

The Generals will compete at the CNU Invitational on September 15. The Harriers will race at 6 p.m. on Friday night in Newport News, Va.
