Women's Golf ODAC Championship Preview

CROZET, Va. - The tenth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's golf team will open up the 2023 ODAC Women's Golf Tournament on Friday at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet. 

The women's 54-hole championship slated for Friday-Sunday, April 27-29; the original tee times were slated to start rolling at 9 a.m. on Frinday but heavy rain in Crozet has put the championship rounds on pause. As of 9:30 a.m. on Friday, the Generals and ODAC competitors are targeting a 2:30 start. Updates on weather and any changes to the schedule will be communicated as decisions are made on ODAC Athletics social media and on odaconline.com.
 

W&L PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ranked 30th in Division III, Megan Kanaby (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) finished second overall out of the 33 golfers during the 2022 Championships with a +8 score of 75-75-74—224.  Her total tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tally in program history. Kanaby, who has led the Generals throughout the 2022-23 season has averaged a score of 76.71 strokes (+4.71) after competing in six tournaments and 14 rounds during her senior campaign.

As a first-year, Marcella Mercer (Bigfork, Montana / Flathead) tied for eighth overall with a 72-79-84—235 (+19) in her first post-season tournament. Mercer is scoring an average of 76.79 (+4.79 vs. par) in her 14 rounds this season. Mercer's highest finish this year was a tied for fourth finish at the MCC Women's Intercollegiate tournament. Mercer appears on the Golfstat's Top-100 list at no. 36.

Laetitia Roegner (Greenwich, Conn. / IMG Academy) will look to improve on her seventh place finish at last year's championship event (77-81-76—234, +18). Roegner is coming off her strongest performance of her sophomore campaign with a fourth place finish at the Max and Susan Stith Invitational, she finished five over par in the two-round tournament. In five tournaments and 12 rounds, Roegner is averaging a +4.33 score per round versus par and No. 29 nationally in the Golfstat individual rankings.

 Sophomore An Shelmire (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) placed fourth overall with a 77-76-75—228 (+12) at the Dominion Club for the 2022 tournament. This season, Shelmire won the NCAA Championships Fall Preview and averages a score of 77.86 (+5.86). Shelmire is the 52nd-ranked player in the division. 

First-year Julia Haetzel will play for her first ODAC trophy and tee off first for the Blue and White. Haetzel has limited action in varsity events, just three tournament appearances, for the Generals but will come into the tournament with a 79.0 average score and +7 against par after those seven rounds. In her most resent outing at the Stith Invitational, Haetzel placed tied for 30th with a low round of 78 on day two.

Last year, Kanaby, Roegner and Shelmire were all named first team All-ODAC and Mercer was voted second team. Kanaby has been named First Team All-ODAC in each of her three seasons playing for the Blue and White.
