FOREST, Va. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team concluded the 2023 campaign with a pair of major post-season awards as announced by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Thursday.
Senior
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach , Va. / First Colonial) was voted the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's athletic communications personnel and Head Coach
Nathan Shearer was voted ODAC Coach of the Year Award by his peers.
In his 11th season at the helm of the Generals program, Shearer led the Blue and White to an 11-2 dual record which included a 5-1 mark in the league to claim a share of the ODAC Regular Season Championship. W&L tallied three weight class champions at the league's tournament with four runner-ups. The nine All-ODAC honorees was a tournament-best and helped W&L to 135.5 points and topped the standings for the team title.
Shearer also collected regional Coach of the Year honors from the
NCAA and NWCA.
Parker is a strategic communications major with a concentration in digital culture and information. The senior is a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll honoree and has been on the Dean's List and is a W&L Scholar Athlete Award winner. On the mat, Parker won the ODAC title at 125 pounds and just missed qualifying for the NCAA championships in placing fourth at the regional championships. He finished the regular season with a 22-2 individual record including a 5-0 mark against conference foes. Parker set the W&L record for wins in a season with 35 and claimed All-American status at the 2022 NCAA Championships. He won 73 matches in his W&L career.
The conference also formally recognized the All-ODAC Wrestling awards in Thursday's release.
