Baseball Defeats Royals 11-4 on the Road; Wins Sixth Straight

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team best Eastern Mennonite in an 11-4 win, the fourth straight conference victory, on Wednesday night.
The Generals (10-3, 4-1 ODAC) ran away with the game after they produced a five-run fifth inning that extended the lead to 7-0 over the Royals (4-12, 0-3)

Sophomore catcher Campbell Charneco (
Clifton, Va./Centreville) continued his recent success at the plate and led off the inning with a solo shot to left center and pushed the General lead to three. Senior center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) followed with a triple down the right-field line and took the final 90 feet for himself after stealing home. Junior shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) and first-year third baseman Nick Lagges (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) kept the inning going, each hitting an RBI double. First-year right fielder Paul Ramseur (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) finished the inning for the Generals with a single to drive in Lagges.
W&L got to work early with a two-run first inning. With two outs, Charneco drew a walk to give the Generals their first base runner. A single by Salvino and junior first baseman Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) with an error sandwiched in the middle allowed Charneco and Salvino to cross the plate and score both runs of the inning.
The Royals went scoreless in the first five stanzas and were held to just five hits. They managed to get on the board after a sixth-inning leadoff single by junior second baseman Cole Bashinski followed by a two-run homerun to left field by senior designated hitter Natty Solomon. EMU rounded out their scoring with a tally in the seventh and ninth innings.
The Generals put up a single run in both the seventh and the eighth inning then closed out the game with a two-run ninth. Both Charneco and Salvino ended the day with three hits and Charneco added two runs batted. Larsen and Zulueta finished with two hits and two RBI each. Larsen reached base in all six of his plate appearances working four walks.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) (2-0) earned the win after he posted five scoreless frames. Fleming allowed just two runs on seven hits with four punchouts in his third appearance of the season. Senior pitcher Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft Schoo) pitched 2.1 innings and limited the Royals to just one run on four hits and three strikeouts.
