GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 24 Washington and Lee men's swimming team used a pair of program, conference and championship meet records to build a stronger lead over the field on the second day at the ODAC Championships on Thursday.
Highlights from the meet:
-The Generals broke both the 500 freestyle (4:31.29) and 400 medley relay (3:21.08) program records, as well as resetting the ODAC and conference meet record book. First-year
Dalton Jobe (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) was the swimmer in the 500 free, while first-years
Charles Byars (Oxford, Miss. / Oxford),
Harrison Cerone (Darnestown, Md. / Georgetown Preparatory School) and
Thomas Denton (Essex, Vt. / Essex) and sophomore
Baxter Smelzer (Greensboro, N.C. / Page) teamed up in the 400 medley relay.
-Denton and Smelzer also shined as individuals, logging one runner-up performance each. Denton's second-place finish came in 1:52.99 in the 200 IM, while Smelzer's was in the 50 free in a time of 20.75.
-W&L also opened the night session with a win in the 200 free relay (1:23.27). Smelzer swam the opening leg and was followed by senior
Todd Echols (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds), junior
Will Hughes (Fairfax, Va. / James W. Robinson Secondary) and senior
Dawson Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside).
-In total, W&L managed 10 Top-5 finishes to conclude the second day of championship races with a meet-high 336 points. Lynchburg has tallied 201 points so far and is in second place, with Roanoke in the No. 3 spot with 175 points.
