W&L Wrestling Sends Three To NCAA DIII Championships

YORK, Pa. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team punched three tickets to the NCAA DIII Wrestling Championships and eight wrestlers finished on the podium at the Southeast Regional Championships hosted by York College (Pa.) on Saturday. 

Ryan Luth (157), Harrison Kelly (165) and Cameron Blizard (197) all finished in the top-3 and qualified for the NCAA DIII Championships in Roanoke, Va. 

The Blue and White recorded 109.0 team points and finished third in the region behind No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 20 Alvernia University. 

In addition to the three automatic bids, the Washington and Lee wrestling staff collected three awards - Assistant Coach Alex Radsky was named the NCAA Southeast Regional Staff Person of the Year award and Head Coach Nathan Shearer was named the Southeast Regional Coach of the Year in addition to receiving the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Coach of the Year award.

125 Championships - Riley Parker 

 

Southeast region first-ranked Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) went 5-2 over the weekend and placed 4th in the final 125 standings. Parker had a tall order ahead of him after falling 3-1 in the first round of the championship bracket but posted five straight wins to qualify for the third place bout. The senior fell to Luke Hoerle of Stevens by major decision (12-4). Hoerle is ranked second in the Southeast region. Parker posted the second-most total match points (21) and total match points (61).

Rubin qualified for the seventh place match but Ferrum's Rubyn Semedo got his revenge from the first round - Rubin defeated the Panther in sudden victory to send Semedo in to the consolation bracket.

Senior Ryan Luth (New Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) placed third in the 157 class and scored 17 team points. The 2022 All-American fell to Alvernia's Jason Rezac by Major Decision (11-3) in the semifinals but answered the call with two straight decision wins to take the final 157 ticket to nationals. Luth went 5-1 on the weekend and claimed his podium finish with a 9-3 win over York's (Pa.) Jared Blair in the third place bout.

Junior Harrison Kelly (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) had one of the highest finishes for the Blue and White. Kelly wrestled his way to a second place finish after winning the first three bouts in the 165 weight class. In the first place match Alvernia's Matt Lackman, the top-ranked wrestler in the region, pinned Kelly (2:46) to claim the 165 title. The sophomore recorded 16 points toward the Generals' team score

Senior Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) went 4-0 through the semifinals to qualify for the first place bout. In the semis, the senior upset the top 184 wrestler in the region, Roanoke's Mahlic Sallah, in a 7-1 decision. Alvernia's Isaac Kassis, who is ranked just above Blizard in the regional rankings at three, won the first place bout and 184 title with a 4-2 victory. Blizard recorded 19 team points in the second place finish.

Junior John Ryan Sedovy's  (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge) season concluded on the first day of the regional championships. Sedovy opened up the tournament with a tech fall win over Conrad Sund of Marymount with a score of 15-0 after five minutes of action. The Lexington native then fell in consecutive bouts to Cameron Butka (Wilkes) in a 5-3 quarterfinal decision then in the consolation bracket to King's College (Pa.) Rich Fronheiser 3-1. Sedovy tallied 2.5 team points toward the W&L score.

All three of Majoys wins were by decision and his final match of the tournament was a 3-2 win over King's (Pa.) wrestler Jacob Feese to earn the seventh place bout win.
