Men's Swimming breaks two more records on Day 3 at ODACs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Another two program records were set, along with four wins in six events, as the Washington and Lee men's swimming team moved one day closer to clinching the 2023 ODAC title on Friday.
 
Highlights from the meet:
-First-year Dalton Jobe (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) highlighted the individual performances with a win in the 400 IM in a program-record time of 3:57.03, besting the previous mark of 4:00.03. His season-best time in the event of 4:02.19 entering the day, which he swam at Franklin & Marshall in November, had established a conference record at the time.
 
-First-year Charles Byars (Oxford, Miss. / Oxford), senior Todd Echols (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) and sophomores Matt Fritz (Reston, Va. / South Lakes) and Baxter Smelzer (Greensboro, N.C. / Page) opened the third day of championship racing in style with a conference, meet and program record in the 200 medley relay (1:30.77).
 
-All four swimmers were also involved in Top 5 individual swims on the night. Fritz won the 100 fly (49.49), Byars took second in the 100 back (50.33), Echols placed fourth in the 100 breast (57.06) and Smelzer logged a fifth-place effort in the 100 fly (51.03). Echols also had a noteworthy performance in the 100 breast during the morning session, swimming a program-record time of 56.68. Fritz's time in the 100 fly was also good for a new ODAC and championship meet record.
 
-Sophomore Luke Nagel (Wayne, Pa. / Conestoga) rounded out the Blue and White's wins on Day 3, as he took the top spot in the 200 free (1:40.63).
 
-The Generals have managed 647 points through three days of championship races to lead the field. Lynchburg remains in second place with 401 points, with Roanoke completing the Top 3 at 354 points.

-Byars, Echols, Fritz, Smelzer – 1st place 200 medley relay (1:30.77; ODAC, meet, program record)
-Dalton Jobe – 1st place 400 IM (3:57.03; ODAC, meet, program record; NCAA B-cut)
-Matt Fritz – 1st place 100 fly (49.49)
-Luke Nagel – 1st place 200 free (1:40.63)
-Patrick Murphy – 2nd place 400 IM (4:03.12)
-Reese Nelson – 2nd place 100 fly (50.48)
-Charles Byars – 2nd place 100 back (50.33)
-Colin Whiting – 3rd place 100 fly (50.51)
-Bennett Ehret – 3rd place 200 free (1:42.95)
-Jackson Hall – 4th place 400 IM (4:08.31)
-Will Hughes – 4th place 200 free (1:44.27)
-Todd Echols – 4th place 100 breast (57.06)
-Dawson Kramer – 4th place 100 back (52.89)
-Baxter Smelzer – 5th place 100 fly (51.03)
-Harrison Cerone – 5th place 100 breast (57.11)
 
Up next:
The Generals will look to wrap up the ODAC title on Saturday, and will compete in preliminary races at 10:00 am before the championship events at 5:00 pm.
