Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

W&L falls to Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0, in ODAC title game

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team was shut out on Sunday by Virginia Wesleyan, as the Marlins hoisted the 2023 ODAC championship trophy behind 1-0 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Despite holding a 6-2 shot advantage at halftime, the Generals (12-3-4) conceded the lone goal in the game in the 26th minute to Julia Marrone, who scored on an assist from Alaina Alston.

The Generals kept VWU (16-3-1) keeper Rachel Quigley busy in the first half, as three of their six shots found the target, but were kept out of the goal by the senior.

The Marlins found more of an offensive flow in the second half with nine total shots, but W&L senior keeper Sydney Smith managed to make three saves in the second stanza, all of which came in a 3:11 span from the 78th to 82nd minutes.

W&L's offense kept up the intensity and pressure on Quigley with six more shots in the second half, but four saves from the home keeper prevented any W&L goals as the Marlins held on for the 1-0 win.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Sophomore Sarah Zimmerman led the W&L attack with three shots on the day, one of which were on target. Sophomores Helen Otteni and Bryn Bissinger combined for four shots, all on goal, while senior Liz Sullivan shot twice and put one attempt on frame. Smith played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with four saves.

Marrone's goal came on one of her two shots in the game, while Shyenne Diaz led all players with four shot attempts. Sam Crawford added two on-target shots, and Quigley was credited with the clean sheet with a seven-save performance.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:
Following the conclusion of the game, Zimmerman, sophomore Sophie Berman and senior Mady Laudisi were each named to the ODAC Women's Soccer All-Tournament Team.

TEAM STATS:
Despite the 9-6 Virginia Wesleyan shot margin in the second half, the Generals finished the game with a slight 12-11 edge in total shots, which included a 7-5 count in shots on goal. The Blue and White also earned nine corner kicks in the game and conceded four.
