Men's Cross Country Takes Second in the South, Six Earn All-Region

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The No. 30 Washington and Lee University men's cross country team placed second in the NCAA's South Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon with a team score of 71 points. 

The Generals(6-10-14-20-21(29)(46)) placed six harriers in the top-30 to earn All-Region status, the most in program history to earn the highest team finish since 2016. 

W&L finished five points ahead of No. 26 Emory and behind No. 10 University of Lynchburg's 37 points. The Hornets claimed the region's automatic team bid into the national meet, W&L will await the NCAA National Championships selection announcement in hopes of earning a team bid on Sunday. 

SCORING SEVEN

  • Row Sterne punched himself an individual ticket to the championship meet next weekend with a sixth place finish in a time of 25:00.48
  • Keaton Rush was on Sterne's heels, 11 seconds later, and was the tenth runner to cross the finish line at 25:11.04. Rush also guaranteed a spot on the starting line next weekend as the 7th individual, not from Lynchburg, to cross the finish.
  • First-year Robert Cooper clocked in a time of 25:21.51 for the 14th fastest time on the day. 
  • Seniors Josh Fingerhut (20th place) and Chris Ruiz (21st place) rounded out the scoring five for W&L with times of 25:29.97 and 25:32.03, respectively. 
  • Rookie Jackson Kodenski recorded a time of 25:49.25 to take 29th and capped W&L's All-Region honorees. 
  • Thomas Franklin was the final General to cross the finish line at 26:30.28 and came in 47th overall.

THE FIELD

  • Lynchburg's Frank Csorba won the event in a time of 24:27.13. 
  • The field consisted of 170 runners from the 24 south region institutions. 
  • The Generals' scoring five spread was just 31 seconds and the scoring seven was 1:29 apart. 
  • Lynchburg won the event with a score of 37 (1-4-5-12-15(23)(37)) in a total time of 2:04.52 for the Hornets' top-5.
