Men's Golf Shoots Three Under Par to Tie for Third of NCAA Preview

BOULDER CITY, Nevada - The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team scored the fifth lowest 54 hole tournament in program history at the NCAA Championships Preview which concluded on Tuesday evening. 

A second day in a row with a team score below par helped the Blue and White rise one spot. The Generals scorecard of 310-281-285--876 (+12) was strong enough to tie for third place with No. 3 Emory who scored 14 under par over the third and final round.

Second-ranked Methodist scored the lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday, the Monarchs carded an incredible -22 (266) with four of the five individuals shooting four-under or better. MU turned in a final scorecard of 301-283-266--850 (-14). 

Top-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (303-286-286--875, +11) finished one stroke better than W&L and Emory to claim place second. 

On Monday, the Generals played the fourth-lowest round and fourth-lowest round versus par in program history on Monday's 18 holes at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Blue and White's 281 (-7) score was the third lowest round of the three day tournament behind Methodist's and Emory's rounds today. 

Cannon Crane (78-69-69--216, E) was the top-finisher for W&L and finished tied for sixth place; six strokes over par on Sunday, the senior put together back-to-back rounds three under par to finish even.

Sewanee's Grayson Maddox (65-70-71--2016, -1) controlled the individual scoring, Maddox finished each round under par to win the title.

Cannon Crane (78-69-69--216, E )

  • Crane rose five slots with his second three-under day in a row. 
  • Crane recorded five birdies to two bogies with 11 pars. 
  • Final Position: Par, T6
  • Second Round Position: Three strokes over par, T11
    • Crane improved 22 positions and finished the second round three strokes under par for a scorecard of 69.
    • Crane noted four birdies and recorded just one bogie to 13 holes for par.
  • First Round Position: Six strokes over par, T33.
    • In the first round, Crane notched an Eagle on the 13th hole.

Jonathan McEwen (79-69-71--219, +3)

  • Rookie McEwen rose three positions on the leaderboard after he finished one under par on Tuesday. McEwen tallied four birdies and was over par on just two holes, the first and 18th. 
  • Final Position: Three strokes over par, T13
  • Second Round Position: Four strokes over par, T16
    • First-year McEwen scored 69 (-3) on Monday's round.
    • On hole 16, McEwen notched an eagle and jumped up 27 slots to be tied for 16th place on the individual board. 
  • First Round Position: Seven strokes over par, T43.
    • McEwen tallied a pair of birdies in the first round.

Elias Malakoff (72-73-76--221, +5)

  • Malakoff struggled on the front nine and dropped 17 positions as a result. 
  • The back nine was excellent for the junior with four birdies to finish two under par.
  • Final Position: Five strokes over par, T21
  • Second Round Position: One stroke over par, T4
    • Malakoff recorded four holes with birdies and was one stroke ahead until the 15th hole
  • First Round Position: Par, T4.
    • Malakoff recorded three birdies and scored an Eagle on hole 13 in the first round.

Peter Sheakley (81-70-73--224, +8)

  • Sheakley had a fantastic back nine after starting on the sixth hole. 
  • He tallied a pair of birdies and eagled the 13th hole with 11 holes on par.
  • Final Position: Eight strokes over par, T33
  • Second Round Position: Seven strokes over par, T31.
    • Sheakley shook off the opening round rust and benefited from the better weather conditions on Monday by scoring 70, two under par.
    • Sheakley used five birdies on Monday to jumped from the 63rd position to 31, the largest W&L improvement from the first to second round. 
  • First Round Position: Nine strokes over par, T63.
    • In his first round of the season, Sheakley tallied 12 holes on par over. 

Walker McPhail (81-78-72--231, +15)

  • McPhail had his best round of the tournament by scoring four birdies in the third round and finished on par. 
  • McPhail jumped up six positions on the individual scoring board.
  • Final Position: Fifteen strokes over par, T63
  • Second Round Position: 15 strokes over par, T69.
    • McPhail scored a pair of birdies on the back nine.
  • First Round Position: Nine strokes over par, T63.
    • McPhail recorded a pair of birdies and was even on the back nine up until the 18th hole over the first round.
