Josh Fingerhut '24 - ODAC XC Championships

Sterne Paces Men's Cross Country at ODAC Championships, Kodenski and Fingerhut Earn Major Honors

SALEM, Va.  - On one of the historically hottest conference championship Saturday's, the 29th-ranked Washington and Lee University men's cross country team took second at the 2023 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships with a score of 49 points.

The Generals were led by Row Sterne's fourth place finish to break up Lynchburg University's first five scorers. 

Following the meet, the Blue and White picked up a pair of postseason laurels with Jackson Kodenski named Rookie of the Meet and Josh Fingerhut was awarded with his second consecutive ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

Kodenski was the first rookie to cross the finish line in 25:33.6 and took 10th place to be named Rookie of the Meet. He is a candidate for Rookie of the Year which will be voted on by conference coaches at the end of the postseason. 

SCORING SEVEN

  • Row Sterne took fourth place with a time of 25:02.5.
  • Chris Ruiz crossed the finish line eighth to earn Second Team All-ODAC honors in a time of 25:28.2. 
  • Jackson Kodenski, the first rookie to finish in the championship event, took 10th place in a time of 25:33.6. 
  • Thomas Franklin took 13th place to finish inside the top-14 and snagged a Second Team All-ODAC medal, Franklin clocked in a time of 25:47.4.
  • Robert Cooper scored 14 points after he placed 15th in a time of 25:49.9. 
  • Keaton Rush and Josh Fingerhut rounded out the scoring seven and both placed inside the top-20. 
  • Rush clocked in at 26:04.8 to place 19th overall (15 team points), and Fingerhut took 20th (16 team points) three seconds after Rush. 

THE FIELD

  • The field consisted of 112 runners from the 11 ODAC institutions. 
  • The Generals' scoring seven spread was just 47.4 seconds. 
  • Lynchburg won the event with a score of 17 (1-2-3-5-6-9-12) in a total time of 2:05.21.
  • The Hornets placed 11 of the top-20 finishers.
  • Bridgewater placed third with 114 points.

Men's cross country will return to action for the South Regional Championships weekend on November 11 in Mount Berry, Ga.
