LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Bridgewater College on Wednesday night inside Holekamp Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-22 BC
- Both teams went back and forth before Bridgewater took a three point lead as Rachael Myers finished off an Ashley Rutherford assist.
- An Allie Buchholz service ace and a Lillie Holcomb kill knotted the set at 20 but the Eagles went on a 5-2 run to take the first frame 25-22.
- Holcomb posted a set-high six kills on 16 attempts with three errors for a .188 hitting percentage. Reagan Stoop led the Eagles with five kills in the first set.
- Ashley Rutherford dished out a set-high 12 assists for Bridgewater. Buchholz led the Generals with 11 assists.
- Sophia Stites of BC dug out a set-high 11 attacks while Vivi Vasquez led the Generals with nine digs.
Set Two | 25-23 BC
- The Generals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Eagles fought their way back to tie the set at 18. After Grace Mitchener gave the Blue and White a 20-18 lead, the Eagles rattled off four points to take a two point lead.
- Bridgewater claimed the second set 25-23 after going on a 3-1 stretch to take a 2-0 set lead.
- Stoop led all players with seven kills on 23 attempts with two errors for a .217 hitting percentage. Michener led W&L with five kills.
- Rutherford of BC dished out a set-high 14 assists in the second frame while Buchholz recorded nine assists.
- Bridgewater's Reagan Stoop dug out a set-high ten attacks while Maddie Weller, Buchholz and Mitchener each recorded five digs.
Set Three | 25-23 BC
- The Generals battled back from an early deficit as Mitchener, Emery Goerig and Riley Debiec recorded three-straight kills to take a 9-8 lead.
- Bridgewater and W&L traded three point swings until the Eagles used two Faith DePew kills to take a 20-19 lead. After a Madeline Walker service error knotted the set at 23, Rachael Meyers and Rutherford recorded back-to-back kills to take the set and earn their first win at W&L since 2007.
- Reagan Stoop led the set with seven kills on 24 attempts with 2 errors for a .208 hitting percentage. Goerig and Mitchener led the Generals with four kills each.
- Ashley Rutherford of BC led the set with 15 assists while Buchholz dished out a team-high ten assists for the Generals.
- Penelope Qulies, Grace Williams, Sophia Stites and Reagan Stoop posted a set-eight digs.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals fall to 14-7 on the season while dropping to 6-4 in conference play. The loss marks the first loss to Bridgewater since Sept. 28, 2019.
- W&L recorded 38 kills on 151 attempts with 18 errors for a .132 hitting percentage.
BRIDGEWATER GAME NOTES
- The Eagles improved to 18-5 and 9-2 on ODAC play. Tonight's win marks their ninth straight win with their last loss coming on Sept. 23 as they fell to Randolph-Macon in four sets.
- Bridgewater secured their first win in Lexington since Sept. 15, 2007 where they also swept the Blue and White in straight sets.
- The Eagles recorded 49 kills on 163 attempts with 15 errors for a .209 hitting percentage.
- BC led all team categories including service aces (3), blocks (5), assists (44), and digs (90).
TOP PERFORMERS
- Bridgewater's Reagan Stoop posted a match-high 19 kills on 64 attempts with four errors for a .234 hitting percentage. Grace Mitchener led the Generals with 12 kills on 46 attempts.
- Ashley Rutherford of BC dished out match-high 41 assists while digging out 11 attacks. Allie Buchholz led the Generals with 31 assists, her tenth match this season with 30 or more assists, while digging out a team-high 17 attacks.
- Bridgewater's Sophia Stites dug out a match-high 25 attacks while Vivi Vasquez led the Generals with 17 digs.
- Rachael Meyers recorded a match-high three blocks while Emery Goering and Faith DePew each recorded two.
UP NEXT
- The Generals head to Newport News, Va. for a tri-match at Christopher Newport University on Saturday Oct. 21. The Blue and White take on Swarthmore College at 1 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. matchup against CNU.
