No. 30 Men's Cross Country Takes Fifth at Mike Woods Invitational

GENESEO, N.Y.  - The No. 30 Washington and Lee University men's cross country team competed at the Mike Woods Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo on Saturday morning. 

The Generals tallied 169 points and took fifth in the competitive 8k; the Blue and White finished behind four Top-15 teams in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.

SCORING SEVEN

  • Row Sterne placed 21st with a time of 24:34.2.
  • Keaton Rush was the second General to cross the finish line in a time of 24:40.9 and placed 24th. 
  • Chris Ruiz and Jackson Kodenski took 40th and 41st place in times of 24:53.8 and 24:54.3, respectively.
  • Ruiz jumped up 11 positions over the last 1000 meters. 
  • Thomas Franklin clocked in at 25:08.3 and placed 55th for 49 team points.
  • Josh Fingerhut placed 74th in a time of 25:26.0, Fingerhut passed four runners in the last 1000 meter stretch. 
  • Jackson Jacobs rounded out the scoring seven with a time of 25:30.1 in 84th place. 

THE FIELD

  • The field consisted of 376 runners and 25 institutions. 
  • The Generals' spread of 34.1 seconds across the 8k is a 20 second improvement from the team's spread at the Paul Short Invitational the last time out. 
  • Row Sterne's time of 24:34.5 is the second fastest 8k time in W&L men's cross country history and Rush's was the third fastest. 
    • The only 8k time faster than Sterne and Rush was at the 1983 DIII Championships when Angus McBryde recorded a time of 24:19 to finish 10th in the country. 
  • The team's average time of 24:50.3 is the best mark in program history. 
  • Sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon won the team title with a score of 31 points (3-5-6-8-9). 
  • The ODAC's 12th-ranked University of Lynchburg finished second with 50 points (1-2-11-12-24). 
  • Frank Csorba and Chasen Hunt finished one-two for the Hornets.

Men's cross country will take a break from competition until October 28 when the Generals along with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships in Salem, Va. hosted by Roanoke College.
