ROME, Ga. – Washington and Lee men's tennis junior
Evan Erb closed out his ITA Cup run on Saturday with a three-set loss against UChicago's Emil Grantcharov.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Erb and Grantcharov faced off in the semifinals of the "North" consolation bracket on Saturday. Grantcharov opened the match with a 6-0 win in the first set, but Erb rebounded to edge the Maroon, 7-6, in the second. Erb opened the second set with a 2-1 lead, but Grantcharov pulled ahead by a 6-5 score. Erb won the next game to force the tiebreaker, before going on to take the breaker, 7-5.
Erb again started the third set up by a 2-1 score, and the two players exchanged the next four games to keep Erb ahead, 4-3. Grantcharov then won three straight games to close out the match with a 6-4 third-set score.
ITA CUP RECAP:
Erb finished the ITA Cup with a 1-2 record, but won the most important match of the three that he played; his first. With his win, Erb will officially be named a 2023-24 ITA Singles All-American in June following the conclusion of the NCAA singles and doubles championships in St. Louis, Mo.

This closes out the fall portion of the W&L men's tennis schedule for the 2023-24 season. They will return to action on February 18 with a match at Swarthmore.
