Generals Take Down Royals in Conference Matchup

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team took down Old Dominion Athletic Conference member, Eastern Mennonite University, in four sets  (21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23) on Tuesday evening.

EMU jumped all over the Generals out of the gate and took the first set 25-21.

After the initial game, W&L gained momentum and did not look back with three quick points to force a home team timeout. The Royals battled back to a 10-9 lead but the Generals benefited from three kills by first year middle blocker Emery Goerig (College Station, Texas / College Station High School) and seven of the next eight points to go ahead 16-11. That lead turned into a 25-21 set two victory for the Generals to tie things up at one.

An early lead for the Generals in the pivotal set three forced a Royals timeout with the Generals on top 9-5.An EMU 9-5 timeout in the third game backfired for the hosts. A 13-4 sent the Blue and White into match four with a 2-1 lead over the Royals and the largest margin of victory of the night, 25-14.

During the third outing, first-year outside hitter, Lillie Holcomb (Greensboro, N.C. / Western Guilford) posted five kills.

After a 4-2 lead by the Royals early in the fourth set, the Generals called a timeout. Midway through the draw, WLU fought back to a 12-12 set. EMU attempted to press into a five-set match and traded the back and forth to a 22-21 Generals advantage. Ultimately, back-to-back attacking errors by EMU determined the fate for the conference matchup. Washington and Lee won the set 25-23.

Holcomb had a career night, she posted16 total kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

The Generals return to Lexington on Friday to take on Randolph at 6 p.m.
