Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 W&L plays Emory to 2-2 draw at home

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team came away with a 2-2 draw against Emory on Sunday afternoon on its home field.

The Eagles (1-3-4) dented the scoreboard first on a Cole Hendricks score in the eighth minute. The scoring chance was created around midfield when Trey Rielly sent a pass updfield on the right side to Hendricks. Hendricks gained possession of the ball around 30 yards out, took one touch forward and buried his shot on the second touch into the top-right corner of the goal.

W&L (4-1-1) responded in the 16th minute on a goal scored by senior midfielder Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park). First-year midfielder Matteo Adler (Cobham, England / ACS Cobham International) received a cross from senior midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) inside the box on the left side. After Adler was unable to find a centering play, he turned and found sophomore defender Will Luik (Bernardsville, N.J. / Bernards) just inside the box. Luik controlled and passed to Bass in the middle just inside 18 yards away, before Bass ripped a shot inside the right post.

The game remained in a 1-1 draw until the 81st minute when sophomore midfielder Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) put W&L out in front on his fourth goal of the season. Bass had control of the ball on the right and made a run towards the middle of the field, where he found senior midfielder John Peterson (Towson, Md. / Loyola Blakefield). From just outside the 18, Peterson took a one-touch pass over to Agbeyegbe, who cut in behind the play, who scored a right-footed shot to the left post.

The Generals' lead was short-lived, however, as Emory was granted a penalty kick in the 86th minute following a foul just inside the 18 on the left side. Alejandro Gomez was the Eagle who drew the foul, and he scored the equalizer on a low shot inside the right post.

Agbeyegbe and Kutsanzira took a match-high four shots each, as Agbeyegbe's four goals this season now lead the team. Bass's three points marked a season-high for the senior, while Luik got on the scoresheet for the first time this season with his assist on Bass's goal. In net, first-year Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) played all 90 minutes and allowed both Emory goals.

Emory finished the game with five total shots, which were taken by Gomez and Hendricks. Gomez tallied three attempts on the day, while Hendricks ended with two. Peter Wagner (1-3-4) played the game's entirety in goal, and he made eight saves.

W&L owned advantages in the game in both total shots (21-5) and shots on goal (10-2), including a 12-3 margin in total shots during the second half. Emory won the corner kick battle by a 5-4 total after a 3-1 second-half edge.

The Generals will return to the pitch on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater at 7:00 pm in their first ODAC contest of the season.
