LEXINGTON – The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened up Old-Dominion Athletic Conference play in dominating fashion taking down conference rival Roanoke College in strait sets, 3-0.
A quick start in set one saw the Generals (4-5, 1-0 ODAC) on top of the Maroons (5-4, 0-1) early 11-6 off of four quick kills by junior outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) to force a Maroon timeout.
After the timeout the Generals would continue the scoring extending its lead to 19-12. A late push by Roanoke would find the Generals ahead 24-16. The Generals would go on to take the set off an ace from sophomore setter Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit).
The Blue and White would get off to a quick start in the second set 7-1 before Roanoke would push back to tie the set at seven a piece. The Generals would push the Maroons back with five strait points to make it 12-7 in the Generals favor.
After a timeout by the Maroons the Generals would continue the scoring to take the set 25-18 off the hand of Heifner who would notch her 10th kill of the night.
The Generals had its eye on eight wins in a row over Roanoke heading into the third set leading 2-0. The Blue and White once again got ahead early 13-6 forcing the Maroons to take an early timeout.
After the early timeout W&L would extend the lead to a 22-11 advantage. With the eight strait victory over the Maroons in sight the Generals would finish off the set with a 25-15 score taking the game 3-0.
The Generals were led by first year Riley Debiec (Potomac, Md. Bishop O'Connell High School) who had a career night with 10 kills a career high.
The Generals return to action on Thursday (Sept. 13) when they travel to Newport News, Va. to take on Christopher Newport starting at 6 p.m.
