LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior attackman Bobby Clagett scored off an assist from senior midfielder Sean Duffy with 2:14 remaining in overtime to lift fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney to an 8-7 victory over top-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday at Wilson Field.
W&L (12-6) held a 7-6 lead with 3:45 left in the game after sophomore attackman
Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) was credited with a goal after the ball slipped out of the crosse for H-SC (13-6) senior goalkeeper Will Perry and bounded into the goal.
The Generals possessed the ball with 1:47 remaining, but Hampden-Sydney junior defender Nick Morgan forced a turnover just six seconds later, setting up the Tigers on the offensive end. Sophomore attackman Ray O'Brien cashed in on the other end, scoring on a dodging lefty shot with just 30 seconds remaining to tie the game.
The Blue & White earned the first possession of the overtime session and ran a great offensive set to get an open look by senior midfielder
Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) with 3:18 left. His shot from 10 yards out hit the crossbar and bounded out of bounds nearest a Hampden-Sydney player, giving the Tigers possession. Following an H-SC timeout with 2:57 left, Claggett scored the game-winner to send the Tigers to the ODAC title game.
W&L jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 24:05 of the game and led 4-1 with 4:19 left in the half. The Tigers held W&L scoreless for the remainder of the second quarter and the entire third period, scoring three straight to tie the game at 4-4 entering the final quarter.
MacCowatt opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal at 14:11 to a 5-4 lead, but the Tigers scored two straight to assume their first lead of the game (6-5) with 7:00 left. Senior attackman
Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored man-up for W&L with 4:33 left to tie the game, and the Generals then took the lead on the ball bounding into the goal from the goalie stick.
W&L held a 46-40 advantage in shots and a 27-22 edge in ground balls. The Tigers won the faceoff battle, 10-9.
Witherell and MacCowatt led W&L with two goals each. Junior defenseman
Harris Hubbard (Daniel Island, S.C. / Bishop England) led the defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior goalkeeper
Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) posted nine saves in goal.
Duffy notched three goals and one assist to lead Hampden-Sydney. Clagett scored three goals and O'Brien finished with one goal and one assist. Perry made a game-high 18 saves in goal.
Washington and Lee will now wait to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hampden-Sydney will meet the winner of the second semifinal between Roanoke and Lynchburg in Sunday's title tilt.
