W&L Men's Lacrosse Cruises to a 27-6 Win Over Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee saw 18 different players find the back of the net in producing a 27-6 win over Guilford in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
The 20th-ranked Generals (10-5, 8-0) scored the first seven goals of the game, including two each from sophomore attackmen Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) and Michael Ott (Savannah, Ga. / St. John's Prep) during the opening run.
 
Guilford (5-8, 3-5) got on the board with a goal by junior attackman Devin Morse with 1:15 left in the first quarter, but W&L senior midfielder Fenner Pollock (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) ended the period with a goal off an assist from Brown with just two seconds remaining for an 8-1 lead.
 
The Quakers opened the second quarter scoring with a goal by junior midfielder Gabe Alvarez just 47 seconds into the frame, but the Blue & White ended the first half with another seven-goal run to carry a 15-2 lead into the intermission.  Senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) and junior midfielder Danny Kung (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) each contributed two goals to the second quarter tally.
 
The visitors once again began the scoring to start the third quarter, with senior attackman Kyle Smaw tallying a goal at the 14:06 mark.  But W&L continued its offensive pressure, going on another five-goal run to assume a 20-3 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the penultimate quarter.  Brown and senior midfielder Braden Rhone (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) each totaled one goal and one assist during the spurt.
 
W&L substituted often in the second half, with senior midfielder Johnny Hsu (Potomac, Md. / Bullis) scoring his first goal of the season and first-year midfielder Riley Albregts (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) tallying the first goal of his career.
 
The Generals out-shot the Quakers, 58-27 and held a 59-20 advantage on ground balls.  W&L also won 27-of-35 faceoffs in the contest and forced 29 Guilford turnovers.
 
Witherell continued his torrid offensive pace of late, leading the way with three goals and three assists.  Brown posted three goals and two assists, while Ott scored three goals.  Rhone notched two goals and one assist, and junior attackman Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) amassed one goal and two assists.  Kung and junior midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) added two goals each.
 
Junior midfielder Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) won 16-of-21 faceoffs and four different keepers played in goal.  Senior Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) played the first 37:55 and made one save (3 goals allowed) to claim the win.  Junior Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster), sophomore Ryan Aljader (Levittown, N.Y. / Chaminade) and first-year Keene Cornick (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) combined to make three saves in the final 22:05 of the game.
 
Sophomore attackman Justin Barry and Alvarez scored two goals each to lead the Quakers.  Senior midfielder Nick Honkomp totaled three assists, while first-year Ryan Reed played all 60 minutes in goal, producing 14 saves.
 
Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Shenandoah University for a 7:00 pm contest.
