Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Thomson Leads W&L Women's Lacrosse Past Shenandoah, 20-10

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore attacker Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley School) registered a career-best six goals in leading the fourth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 20-10 win over Shenandoah on Wednesday evening at Watt Field.

Despite the comfortable margin of victory, the Generals (12-2, 6-0) found themselves facing their largest deficit in over a month after the Hornets (9-5, 4-2) opened the first quarter with a 5-0 advantage.  Shenandoah held W&L to just one shot in the opening 15 minutes, forcing five General turnovers.  Junior attacker Riley Cisar did much of the damage on the offensive end for SU, totaling two goals and one assist during the five-goal run.

It didn't take long after the start of the second quarter for W&L to begin turning the tide, as Thomson got things started with a goal off a free-position shot just 36 seconds into the period.  Her goal was the first in a four-goal Generals' run that pulled W&L within 5-4 just 2:16 into the second quarter.  Senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) scored two goals during the run, while sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) added one as well.

Sophomore attacker Emily Onorato broke the W&L run with a goal off a free-position shot with 10:25 left in the second quarter, but the Blue & White scored the final two goals of the half to knot the score at 6-6.  Edmonson contributed her third goal of the first half at the 7:21 mark, and senior attacker Maggie Frankel ended the first-half scoring with a free-position goal at the 3:18 mark.

Thomson kept the momentum going for W&L, opening the second half with unassisted goals at 13:41 and 11:42 to give W&L its first lead of the game (8-6).  Shenandoah sophomore attacker Gabriella Raspanti attempted to stunt the Generals' offensive onslaught when she scored off an assist by Onorato at the 10:10 mark, but the Generals scored six more times before the end of the penultimate quarter to claim a 14-7 advantage.  Thomson scored twice during the six-goal run, while Bishop totaled one goal and one assist.

Shenandoah scored three of the first five goals of the fourth period to make it a 16-10 game with 5:05 remaining, but W&L closed with four straight tallies, including a pair by first-year midfielder Claire Horner (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's School), to continue pulling away to the 10-goal final margin.

W&L finished with a 36-15 advantage in shots and a 15-12 edge in ground balls.  The Generals also held a 22-11 advantage in draw controls.

Thomson's career day was supplemented by four goals from Edmondson, and two goals and one assist each from Bishop and junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton).  Sophomore Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal, stopping two shots, while senior defender Caroline Hall (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) played a fabulous field game, recording four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control.

Cisar and Raspanti paced the Hornets with three goals and one assist apiece.  Onorato chipped in one goal and two assists, while junior goalkeeper Ashley MacFarlane registered nine saves.

Washington and Lee returns to play on Saturday when it travels to Denison for a 12:00 pm contest.
