LEXINGTON, Va. – The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team set a program record for goals scored in a 31-2 victory over Ferrum on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (8-5, 6-0) had 19 different players score in registering the record goal total that eclipsed the former mark of 29 goals set four times between 1993 and 2014.
The game featured a slow start until a late flurry to close the first period turned a 1-1 game into an 8-1 W&L lead to begin the second quarter. The Blue & White posted seven goals in the final 3:16 of the first quarter, including four scores in the final 1:25 of the frame.
Sophomore attackman
Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) got the run started with an unassisted goal at 3:16 and he would go on to finish the quarter with two goals and two assists. W&L tacked on four more goals in the opening 4:02 of the second quarter, including two goals by senior attackman
Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum). His second goal of the period was his third of the game, giving him 100 career goals. He would go on to finish with a career-high seven points on a career-best six goals and one assist. Witherell now has 139 career points on 103 goals and 36 assists.
Sophomore attackman
Michael Ott (Savannah, Ga. / St. John's Prep) contributed three goals and two assists, while Brown finished with two goals and three assists. First-year attackman
Joey Allen (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) scored his first career goal and added three assists, while first-year attackman
Jack Elliott (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) and first-year midfielder
Mikel Zahralddin (Wilmington, Del. / Episcopal) both scored their first career goals as well. Senior attackman
Ian Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) chipped in three goals and sophomore attackman
Justin Le (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep) posted three assists. Three goalkeepers played in the contest led by senior
Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison), who played the first 30 minutes, recording one save to earn the win.
Washington and Lee out-shot the Panthers (3-10, 0-8) by a count of 65-10 and the Generals held advantages of 58-18 in ground balls and 31-4 on faceoffs. Junior midfielder
Matt Gallagher (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) won 11-of-12 faceoffs and junior defenseman
Harris Hubbard (Daniel Island, S.C. / Bishop England) led the defense with three caused turnovers.
Junior defenseman Adam Brooks and senior attackman Patrick Martinek scored the two goals for Ferrum. Sophomore Brody Johnson played all 60 minutes in goal and notched 11 saves.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
