LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year pitcher
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings of relief and first-year catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) hit two home runs to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to an 11-10 comeback win, culminating in a walk-off walk on Tuesday night.
Trailing by three runs to start the ninth inning, the Generals (10-12, 5-7 ODAC) put their first two runners on base and advanced them to second on a wild pitch, before senior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School) plated both on a single to right. Bassi later scored the tying run on a single to right from junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) to tie the game, 10-10.
The Royals (7-13, 4-5 ODAC) then elected to intentionally walk sophomore
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) to load the bases. First-year
Mike Carpenter (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) came to the plate as a pinch hitter and walked on five pitches to bring Charneco home from third and end the game.
After EMU scored seven runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-4 lead, the Generals answered with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) laced a double to right to score Bassi, while Charneco followed with a two-run home run down the left-field line to cut the W&L deficit to three runs.
The Royals scored the first three runs of the game on RBI knocks from senior center fielder Jaylon Lee, senior catcher Ray Tricarico and senior shortstop Brett Lindsay. W&L put their first four runs up in the bottom of the third, and took a 4-3 lead, when Charneco hit a three-run shot to left.
Charneco's two-homer game marked the first for the Generals since Keegan Dolan hit a pair of home runs in a 9-5 win over Virginia Wesleyan on April 20, 2014. Charneco finished with five RBI and three runs scored. Bassi went 2-for-5, scored three times and drove in two, while Wickman, Salvino and junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) all finished with two hits and combined for three runs and two RBI.
Blair (2-3) earned the win on the mound after pitching the final 5.1 frames, and he allowed no runs on just one hit with one walk and six strikeouts.
Lindsay went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead the EMU offense, while Tricarico went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lee and senior right fielder Jordan Jones combined for five hits, four runs and two RBI.
Senior left-hander Brendon Barrett (1-4) suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed two runs on two hits with three walks, while recording just one out in the ninth. Senior Daniel Hupart started the ninth, but was pulled after walking one batter and hitting the next. Senior Gage Riddick started and allowed seven earned runs over 5.2 innings, while sophomore Adrian Abad tossed 2.1 scoreless frames with three strikeouts.
The Generals will return to the diamond on Saturday when they host Guilford in an ODAC doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
