FERRUM, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team outscored Ferrum by 20 points in the third quarter to cruise to an 88-58 win over the Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals improve to 15-4 overall and 12-1 in the ODAC with the win, while the Panthers fall to 5-16 overall and 3-11 in conference with the loss.
Both sides battled closely in the first, with the longest run belonging to the Panthers (7-0) to keep them close, 17-15, through the opening frame. However, the Generals used a 17-5 run from the end of the first until the 6:52 mark of the second to expand their lead to 30-20. Senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) led the team with eight points during the run, with a pair of made three-point shots.
The Panthers pulled back to within three points at 2:15 before halftime on a jumper from junior guard Aisha Martin, but W&L scored the final eight points of the half to take an 11-point advantage into the break.
W&L's overall run expanded to 19-0 as the team scored the first 11 points of the third to balloon the lead to 53-31. Junior guard
Tahri Phillips (Wrightsville, Pa./Linden Hall School for Girls) scored six points over the final three minutes of the third, as the Generals' lead grew to 31 points heading into the final frame. Ferrum started the fourth on a 13-1 run, but the Generals finished the game with a 17-6 stretch to yield the final result.
Horn finished with a game-high 20 points, as she went 8-for-12 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. Phillips tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 3-of-5 from long range, while senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) scored 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Diehl's perfect field goal percentage tied a program single-game record, and it is just the fifth occurrence in program history of a player making at least five shots with zero missed attempts.
With nine points on three made triples, senior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) became just the eighth player in program history with at least 100 made three-point shots.
Ferrum junior guard Kayla Cabiness scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Martin scored 15 points and finished with six boards and four steals, while senior forward Cameron Hawkins tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
W&L shot a season-high 54.8 percent (34-62) from the floor in the win and made 52 percent (13-25) of its three-point attempts, as both were the highest for the team since March 6, 2021. The Generals' bench outscored the Panthers', 38-0, and also held a 15-4 edge in second-chance points.
The Generals will return to action on Monday evening, when they travel to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm start against the Maroons.
