WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior 157-pounder
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) and junior 125-pounder
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) both qualified for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships and Washington and Lee placed fourth in the team standings at the NCAA Southeast Regional held at Lycoming College on Friday and Saturday.
Luth repeated as the 157-pound champion after having claimed the same title in 2020, the last time the NCAA Southeast Regional was held. Parker advances to the NCAA Championship for the first time in his career after placing third in the 125-pound bracket.
Stevens Institute of Technology took home the team title after compiling 160.5 points and they were followed by Alvernia in second-place with 151.0 points. Averett was third with 127 points and W&L posted 103.5 points. York (Pa.) was fifth with 97.0 points.
In addition to Luth and Parker, the Generals had several other wrestlers place in their respective weight classes. Junior Cameron Blizzard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) came one win from qualifying, placing fourth in the 174-pound bracket. Senior
Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) took fifth-place at 141 pounds, senior
Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) was fifth at 184 pounds and sophomore
John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) was fifth at 197 pounds.
Luth had anything but an easy path to the podium on Saturday, squaring off against the region's third-ranked wrestler in Eric Hutchinson of York in the semifinals. He recorded a 5-2 victory to then meet Nick Barnhart of Messiah, the region's top ranked wrestler, in the championship match. Barnhart handed Luth his only loss of the season, beating him 9-6 in the championship match of the Messiah Invitational back on November 6. This time, Luth gained the upper hand and claimed a 9-7 victory to improve to 29-1 on the season.
Parker also had a stiff challenge in claiming his ticket to nationals. After dropping a 9-3 decision to Keito Shaw of Alvernia on Friday, he had to battle his way through the consolation bracket to claim third-place. On Saturday, his first matchup was with Akhil Vega of Stevens, the sixth-ranked wrestler in the region. He posted a 7-4 win and then he had to face third-ranked Mac Cafurello of Roanoke, who had beaten him back on November 10. Parker emerged with an 11-4 win this time, setting up a title bout with fifth-ranked Jared Kuhns of York. Parker claimed his bid with a 6-2 victory to improve to 31-7 overall this year.
Blizard dropped his first match of Saturday, succumbing to the region's top-ranked wrestler, Stefan Major of Stevens, by fall (1:46) in the semifinals. He then defeated Shenandoah's Dylan Weaver, 7-6, to make it to the third-place match. Blizard gave third-ranked Kade Kravits of King's all he could handle before dropping a 4-0 decision.
Cunningham completed his tournament with a 4-2 overall record, defeating sixth-ranked Quinn Tobin of Alvernia in the fifth-place match, 5-1.
Basham also logged a 4-2 record for the weekend, completing the tournament by pinning Khalil Mitchell of Averett (2:21) in the fifth-place match.
Sedovy also found the podium after a stellar tournament and a 4-2 overall record for the weekend. He finished the day with a 6-2 win over Alex Donahue of Washington & Jefferson, the fourth-ranked wrestler in the region.
Luth and Parker will now advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship, which will be held on March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
