W&L Wrestling Ranks Fifth After Day 1 of the NCAA Southeast Regional

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals and sits in fifth-place out of 20 teams after the first day of the NCAA Southeast Regional held at Lycoming College on Friday.

Alvernia leads the team competition with 103.5 points.  The Golden Wolves are followed by Stevens in second with 94.0 points and Averett is in third with 78.0 points.  Wilkes is fourth with 66.0 points and the Generals are fifth with 65.5 points.

Individually, W&L is led by juniors Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) and Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale), who have advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes and are just one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Competing in the 157-pound bracket, Luth began his day with a win by fall (4:23) over Christian Hite of Ferrum.  He then defeated Adam Coleman of Delaware Valley, 6-2, before notching a 12-0 major decision over Peyton Hearn of Thiel.  Luth will take on York's Eric Hutchinson in the semifinals as he attempts to win his second consecutive regional title.

Blizard began his day in the 174-pound weight class with a win by fall (0:50) over Bill Simpson of Waynesburg.  He then posted a 13-5 major decision over George Moseley of Averett to advance to his semifinal matchup with Stefan Major of Stevens.

Several other W&L wrestlers are still alive in the consolation bracket in an attempt to finish top three and advance to nationals.

Junior 125-pounder Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) went 2-1 on Friday and will take on Akhil Vega of Stevens in his first match on Saturday.  Senior 141-pounder Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) is also 2-1 and will open his Saturday with a match against Russell Benson of Delaware Valley.

Senior 184-pounder Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) is also 2-1 and will face Joel Kanagy from Greensboro on Saturday morning, while sophomore John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) will carry a 2-1 tournament record into his match against William Baldwin of Averett in the 197-pound bracket.

Senior Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) went 2-2 overall but was knocked out of the 165-pound bracket.  Salerno won each of his first two matches by fall, breaking the Centennial Conference record for career pins in the process.  Salerno already held the W&L record for season (24) and career pins.  His career total of 62 pins is two better than the record held by both Brock Glotfelty and Charlie Conaway of McDaniel College.

Saturday's action will begin at 9:00 am from the campus of Lycoming College.
