SALEM, Va. — Fifth-seeded Roanoke used an 18-2 run midway through the first half to oust the fourth-seeded Washington and Lee men's basketball team, 82-69, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday at the Salem Civic Center. The loss spoiled a career-performance by junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley), who totaled 30 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
The Generals (12-11) built a six-point lead, 24-18, through the game's first 11 minutes, capped on a jumper by senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Over the next four minutes, the Maroons (18-8) took control of the contest with an 18-2 spurt to take a 36-26 advantage. During the run, Roanoke went 7-of-9 from the field, while the Blue and White shot 1-of-7 from the floor.
W&L trimmed the deficit to five, 42-37, with 1:45 left in the half off a layup by Wise, but Roanoke scored five of the last seven points to extend the margin back to eight (47-39) at halftime.
The Maroons carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the first seven points of the period to assume a 54-39 lead with 14:45 remaining in the game. The Generals responded with seven straight points, with five coming from Wise, to pull to within eight (54-46) with 12:26 to go in the contest.
Over the next three minutes, Roanoke outscored W&L, 10-4, to regain a 14-point margin, 64-50. The lead never dropped below eight points the rest of the way, as the Maroons secured the 13-point win.
The 30 points by Wise marked the most in an ODAC Tournament by a W&L player in program history, eclipsing the record of 28 points held by Pat Dennis '78 on two different occasions. Wise finished 11-of-20 from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Lamendola added 10 points, three rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two steals. The two steals moved his career total to 142, which marks the fifth-most in program history.
Junior guard Kasey Draper led Roanoke with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Justin Kuthan added 14 points and eight boards.
Neither team shot well from the free throw line, but the Maroons made six more attempts, going 14-of-25 (56.0 percent), while W&L made just 9-of-23 (39.1 percent).
This concludes the 2021-22 season for the men's basketball team.
