Horn leads big fourth-quarter run in 75-60 win at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior guard Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and led a 14-0 run to push the Washington and Lee women's basketball team past Guilford, 75-60, on Saturday in ODAC play.

With the win, the Generals improve to 18-4 overall and 15-1 in the ODAC, tying the program record for most ODAC wins in a season. The 18 overall wins is now tied for the second-most in season and they need just one more victory to tie the 2018-19 team for the program record. Guilford falls to 6-13 overall and 4-10 in conference play.

With a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, Horn hit a three to push the Generals ahead by 10 points. Guilford senior guard J'la Hinson then scored six points during an 8-4 Quaker run to get back within six points. However, Horn nailed two more triples to ignite a 14-0 run for the Generals, as they took their biggest lead of the game (20 points) with 2:21 remaining to seal the win.

After a game-opening three from sophomore guard Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), Guilford went on an 11-2 run to take a six-point lead. W&L answered with a 9-1 run to regain a two-point advantage, before senior guard Lindsay Gauldin hit a three to end the period.

Gauldin opened the second with a layup, but the Generals went on a 10-4 run to take a 24-21 lead at the 7:53 mark. The Quakers took a 27-26 lead at the midway point, before W&L went on to score eight straight points and put together an overall stretch of 13-4 to gain an eight-point advantage.

Neither side was able to score more than two consecutive times in the third, as a 14-13 third-period score favoring W&L left the Generals leading by seven points heading to the final frame.

Horn finished the game with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 3-for-4 from long range, to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. Malik tallied 15 points and shot 5-for-8 from three-point distance. Junior guard Ana Dorta (Katonah, N.Y. / John Jay) and first-year forward Lauren Achter (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo) chipped in nine points each, with Achter pulling down a team-high nine boards.

Hinson and Gauldin combined for 51 of Guilford's 60 points in the game. Hinson totaled 26 points, six rebounds and seven steals, while Gauldin notched 25 points four rebounds and two steals.

W&L shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor and limited the Quakers to 37.1 percent (23-62) overall. The Generals also held a 24-point advantage from beyond the arc (36-12) and outrebounded Guilford by a 47-27 margin. W&L also got 37 points from its bench, while all 60 of Guilford's points came from the starters.

The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they face Roanoke in Holekamp Gym at 7:00 pm.
