BALTIMORE, Md. – Washington and Lee seized the Centennial Conference title in four individual weight classes to win its second straight conference title on Saturday afternoon at Johns Hopkins University.
W&L had compiled just three individuals conference champions across its first 23 years as a member of the Centennial Conference, more than doubling its all-time count with this year's championship results. All told, eight different W&L wrestlers made it on the podium as four more individuals took third-place in their respective brackets.
The Generals compiled 97.0 team points to out-distance the host Blue Jays, who tallied 87.0 points. Ursinus was third with 66.5 points, followed by Gettysburg (44.5), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (37.0), Muhlenberg (34.0) and McDaniel (20.0). Gettysburg 149-pounder Eric Mougalian was tabbed the outstanding wrestler, while Johns Hopkins 165-pounder Dominic Reyes collected the Chris Clifford Award as the wrestler with the most career points in the championship.
Junior
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn./Joseph A Foran) repeated as the conference champion at 157 pounds. He also seized the 157-pound title in 2020, the last championship held by the Centennial Conference. The top seed, Luth received an opening round bye and then he notched an 8-0 major decision over Muhlenberg's Anson Dewar in the semifinals. In the title bout, Luth defeated Johns Hopkins' Chris Roybal by major decision, 12-4.
Junior 125-pounder
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) won his first conference title, knocking off the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the process. He also had a first-round bye and then he defeated second-seeded Joey Lamparelli of Muhlenberg, 10-5. Parker then downed top-seeded Terry Adams of Ursinus by a score of 6-5 to claim the championship.
Senior 141-pounder
Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) also won his first conference title after placing as the runner-up at 133 pounds two seasons ago. The top seed this year, he had a first-round bye and then notched a tech fall over Joe McNeely of McDaniel, 16-1. In the championship, he registered a 5-0 victory over second-seeded Edward Pinc from the Merchant Marine Academy.
Senior
Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) also brought home the title in the 285-pound bracket. The top seed, he pinned McDaniel's Eric Ward (2:00) and followed with another pin over USMMA's Reid Garrison (3:41) in the semifinals. In the title match, Chadwick was up on second-seeded Hank Behaeghel when Behaeghel was injured and could not continue.
Seniors
Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and
Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols), junior
Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) and first-year
Nic Zamaloff (Wall Township, N.J. / Academy of Allied Health and Science) all placed third in their respective weight classes.
Salerno went 2-1 overall, pinning Eric DeWald of the Merchant Marine Academy in 1:42 of the third-place match. For Salerno, it was the 60th pin of his career, tying him with Brock Glotfelty and Charlie Conaway, both of McDaniel, for the Centennial Conference career record.
The top seed, Basham logged a 3-1 mark on his way to third-place accolades. He produced a 24-8 technical fall over Grant Walnoha of Johns Hopkins in the third-place match.
Blizard posted a 2-1 record for the day, pinning Ursinus' Noah Supsic (1:45) in the third-place match.
Zamaloff was the top seed at 149 pounds, suffering his only loss to Mougalian, who was named the outstanding wrestler of the championship. Zamaloff finished his day with a 3-1 mark, defeating Austin Manning of the Merchant Marines in the third-place match, 9-0.
Washington and Lee will be back in action on February 20 when the reserves will compete in the Mideast Futures Open hosted by Muhlenberg College starting at 10:00 am.
