Box Score SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Washington and Lee University men's basketball team defeated Susquehanna University 89-85 in an overtime thriller on Monday morning at the Puerto Rico Clasico at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente Walker arena.
In order to tie the game at 77-77, the Generals (6-4) needed to overcome a 12-point deficit with 12:02 left on the clock. The task was a tall order because the Blue and White never found themselves on top in the second half and trailed the River Hawks (3-7) for nearly all of regulation.Â
Five straight Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn. / Newtown) points at the end of regulation helped him reach 34 total and put W&L in a postilion to claim their second overtime victory of three this season.
DiSibio tallied 8 of the Generals' 12 points in the extra period alongside a
Drew Harrell (Collingswood, N.J. / Paul VI) basket and
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va. / Handley) free throws to steal the win from Susquehanna.Â
The teams entered into the locker rooms at half time with SU having a 47-42 upper hand. Out of the break, the River Hawks extended their lead out to a contest-high 12 points at 12:02. Susquehanna possessed the lead for 29:32 during the entire contest compared to W&L's 8:02, five of which came in the opening stanza.Â
The Blue and White marched back with an 8-point spurt to chip away at the double-digit deficit. With 5:40 left in regulation the squad cut that lead down to one, the two teams traded possession and trips to the charity strip as both teams found themselves in foul trouble early.Â
DiSibio wrapped up regulation with two field goals, one from long range and a pair of FTs to send the Generals into OT at a 77-77 stalemate.Â
W&L edged the River Hawks 12-8 in extra time after a back-and-forth effort. The Generals took the lead for good on a DiSibio free throw after draining three field goals to bring the scoreboard to 86-85. DiSibio and Wise closed out the contest 4-of-4 from the line to secure the victory.Â
In addition to the lopsided time with the lead, the score was knotted up on 13 occasions with 5 lead changes, four of which happened in the first half.Â
DiSibio was nearly perfect from the charity stripe (9-for-10) and led all scorers with 30 points.
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Radnor) posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md. / Sidwell Friends) added 9 points.Â
Wise dished out five assists and grabbed eight boards with 10 points and three of the team's seven steals.Â
The Generals will take on Scranton University tomorrow, Tuesday, December 20 at 6 p.m. AST (5 p.m. ET) on the second day of the Puerto Rico Clasico.Â
