Men's Swimming in second place after first day at F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team currently sits in second place out of eight teams through one of three nights of finals competitions at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational on Friday.
 
Highlights from the meet:
-The Generals were led by first-year Dalton Jobe (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School), who came in second in the 500 free (4:39.37), in addition to helping the 400 medley relay (3:26.11) to a third-place finish.
 
-F&M leads its home invite with 552 points, followed by W&L (414.5), Mary Washington (373.5), Mount St. Mary's (359) and Shippensburg (268) to complete the Top 5.
 
-First-year Thomas Denton (Essex, Vt. / Essex) added a third-place effort in the 200 IM (1:55.90), and he joined Jobe, sophomore Matt Fritz (Reston, Va. / South Lakes) and senior Todd Echols (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) on the 400 medley relay.
 
-Echols also swam on the fourth-place finishing 200 free relay (1:25.45) with sophomore Baxter Smelzer (Greensboro, N.C. / Page), junior Will Hughes (Fairfax, Va. / James W. Robinson Secondary) and senior Dawson Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside). Individually, Echols added a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM (1:57.99) and Baxter came in sixth in the 50 free (21.41).
 
Top Finishes:
-Smelzer, Hughes, Echols, Kramer – 4th place 200 free relay (1:25.45)
-Fritz, Echols, Denton, Jobe – 3rd place 400 medley relay (3:26.11)
-Dalton Jobe – 2nd place 500 free (4:39.37)
-Luke Nagel – 4th place 500 free (4:42.50)
-Thomas Denton – 3rd place 200 IM (1:55.90)
-Todd Echols – 7th place 200 IM (1:57.99)
-Baxter Smelzer – 6th place 50 free (21.41)
 
Up next:
The Generals will return for the second day at the F&M Invitational on Saturday with preliminary races starting at 9:30 am, followed by finals at 6:00 pm.
