Volleyball Stings Hornets in Four

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University volleyball squad took down Shenandoah University 3-1 on Friday night in 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19 sets.

The Hornets (7-8, 3-3 ODAC) took the first set from the Generals (10-8, 7-1) but the Blue and White went on to claim the next three to earn another conference win.

Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) led Washington and Lee with 21 kills and 23 digs.

The opening set found the Hornets with a 9-4 advantage to start off the night. A seven point run for the visitors put W&L in the lead for the first time. Shenandoah responded with an 8-1 run and maintained that lead to take the first set 22-25. Washington and Lee had not dropped a set to Shenandoah since the 2018 season.

WLU bounced back in the second but had to battle throughout the series between 11 tied scores and six lead changes. The last tie came at 19-19, the Generals then took seven of the last nine points and evened the series 1-1, 25-21.

Set three was more of the same with ten ties and six additional lead changes but W&L came back from a 20-22 deficit, scored five straight from the line off a Maddie Weller (West Chester, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) service ace and three straight Heifner kills. A 25-22 win sent WLU into the fourth set with a 2-1 advantage.

All tied up at nine apiece, Washington and Lee went on a seven-point rally and jumped out to a 16-9 lead and did not look back the remainder of the night. The match point came off an Ashley Webb set to Lillie Holcomb (Greensboro, N.C. / Western Guilford). Her attack hit the back right corner to finish off the evening.

The Generals recorded seven aces and nine blocks during the road win. Riley Debeic (Potomac, Md. / Bishop O'Connell) added 14 kills. Debiec, Heifner, and Ryan Taylor (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin High School) all recorded three blocks.
