Generals and Yellow Jackets draw, 1-1, on Watt Field

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team finished with its fourth draw of the season on Wednesday evening, a 1-1 result against Randolph-Macon at home.

All the scoring in the contest took place in the second half, as the Generals (6-0-4, 1-0-1 ODAC) scored in the 77th minute, followed by the Yellow Jackets (7-2-2, 2-0-1 ODAC) in the 78th minute.

W&L's goal came off the right foot of first-year midfielder Bryn Bissinger (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic). Following a throw-in, senior forward Lindsay White (Greenville, S.C. / JL Mann) tried to make a move around a defender on the left sideline, but was cut off. She left the ball back for Bissinger, who then lofted the ball into the box. The ball continued to carry and managed to fly over the outstretched arm of the keeper in the top-right corner for the game's first goal.

Just 55 seconds later, R-MC equalized when first-year forward Ally Spangler settled the ball to her feet and left it for junior forward Olivia Owens. Owen took a couple touches towards goal and unleashed a shot from distance, which beat W&L junior keeper Sydney Smith (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) to the top-left corner of the frame.

Following the Yellow Jackets' goal, four shots were taken over the final 12:52, including three by the Generals. White put one of the team's three shots over the final stretch on goal, but it was saved in the low-left corner of the goal. R-MC's lone shot over the final 13 minutes was saved by Smith in the 84th minute.

Both teams also had stretches of bad luck throughout the first half, as the sides had two shots each hit off either the post or the crossbar.

First-year midfielder Helen Otteni (Arlington, Va. / The Potomac School) led W&L with a game-high six shots, and she put two attempts on goal. Bissinger, who was one of three Generals to attempt three times in the game, scored her first collegiate goal, while White's assist on the play was her second this season. W&L had nine different players tally a shot, with six trying multiple times.

For the Jackets, sophomore forward Riley Russ took a team-high five attempts, but put just one on goal. Owens' goal came on her only attempt of the game. In goal, junior Abby Cook (7-2-2) stopped 10 shots across the 90 minutes of play.

W&L took 12 shots in the first half and 11 in the second half to conclude the game with a 23-8 advantage, which included 11-2 in attempts on goal. Corner kicks also favored the Blue and White by a 9-0 margin, including 7-0 in the first half.

The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm kick-off.
