LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team opened the second half on a 16-0 run en route to a 79-74 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Holekamp Gym.
The Generals (4-6, 2-2 ODAC) trailed 44-38 at intermission, but an old-fashioned three-point play by junior guard
Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./Sidwell Friends) and two free throws from sophomore forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) pulled W&L to within one, 44-43, just two minutes into the second half.
Junior guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) put the Blue and White in front, 45-44, on a jumper and DiSibio followed with a jumper of his own to extend the Generals' lead to three (47-44) with 17:06 left in the contest.
After nearly two minutes of game action without a point from either sqaud, first-year guard
Thomas Feigin (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) doubled W&L's margin with a three-pointer, and then junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) capped the spurt with back-to-back buckets to extend the Blue and White's advantage to 54-44 with 13:49 on the clock.
The Generals' lead was down to seven (71-64) with just 3:13 left in the contest, and then the Tigers (7-3, 2-1 ODAC) made six straight free throws to trim their deficit to one, 71-70, with 1:34 remaining in the game.
On W&L's next possession, senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) found a cutting Wise for a layup, and then following a missed jumper by H-SC, Manigault made a driving layup with 39 ticks on the clock to stretch the Blue and White's lead to five (75-70). The Tigers played the foul game the rest of the way, but could pull no closer, as the Generals held on for the five-point win.
DiSibio led all players with 25 points to go with 11 rebounds and two assists. It marked the fourth straight game he has totaled at least 20 points. Sophomore forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Wise contributed 11 points, three rebounds and two blocks.
W&L shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor, while holding H-SC to 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the field. The Blue and White also shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from long range and the Tigers were 8-of-26 (30.8 percent).
Senior forward Jake Hahn led Hampden-Sydney with 18 points. Junior guard Ryan Clements totaled 16 points and seven rebounds.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday with a 7:00 pm game at Shenandoah.
