LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team outscored Virginia Wesleyan, 49-21, across the second and third quarters to cruise to an 88-53 win at home on Saturday.
The Generals improve to 13-3 overall and 10-0 in the ODAC, while also boosting their home winning streak to 17. The Marlins fall to 3-16 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
In the first quarter, the Generals used a 6-0 run at the midpoint of the frame and a 10-3 run to close the period to lead by a score of 19-16 heading into the second. Junior guard
Ana Dorta (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) aided the 10-3 run with a pair of floaters. In the second, the Marlins knotted the game at 27-27, before the Generals used an 18-0 run into the third quarter to take a 45-27 lead.
W&L's lead continued to grow and reached 29 points with 3:15 left in the third after the Generals completed an overall run of 32-3. Heading into the final quarter with a 68-37 lead, the Generals reached their largest lead of the day (37 points) with 1:48 to play on a layup from junior forward
Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School).
Senior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored a team-high 14 points, as she made 5-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-8 three-point attempts. With her four triples, Groninger passed Ansley Miller '00 for ninth place on the W&L career three-pointers list (93). Vandiver chipped in 13 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, with eight rebounds and two steals, while senior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Junior guard
Tahri Phillips (Wrightsville, Pa./Linden Hall School for Girls) provided a strong 11 minutes off the bench, as she scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep. Senior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) rounded out the group of five Generals in double-figure scoring with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Virginia Wesleyan sophomore forward Adaje Williams scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the foul line. She also recorded four rebounds, three steals and four blocks. Senior guard Celeste Rucker and first-year guard Jada Norman each scored eight points and combined for 11 rebounds.
The Generals shot 40.7 percent (33-81) in the game and made 14 three-point shots, finishing just one made three-point shot away from tying the program record, as they tallied a mark of 42.4 percent from deep. The Marlins posted a 29.9 percent (20-67) field-goal game and made just 1-of-14 (.071) three-point shots. W&L grabbed 61 rebounds in the game, tied for the third most in a game in program history.
