W&L Football Posts Amazing Comeback Win Over Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee scored on the game's final play and then was successful on a 2-point conversion run to record a 25-24 win over 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Day Field.

The Generals (3-1, 2-0) started the final series on their own 1-yardline with 7:38 left in the fourth quarter.  The Blue & White proceeded to march 99 yards on an incredible 17 plays, converting on one third-down and overcoming a personal foul penalty while deep in R-MC (3-1, 1-1) territory.  The last seven plays of the drive were engineered by sophomore backup quarterback Stephen Murrin (Fort Worth, Texas / Fort Worth Country Day), who took over for senior Jack Pollard (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) when he was injured on the 10th play of the series.  W&L drove to the Yellow Jacket 1-yardline, where it faced a 4th-and-goal with one second remaining on the clock.  Murrin punched it in and the Generals set up a 2-point play for the win.  Murrin option-pitched the ball to senior running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) who ran it in untouched for the win, W&L's first over a ranked opponent since a 20-17 win over No. 23 Guilford during the 2015 season.

Neither team led by more than a touchdown throughout the game, with the Yellow Jackets taking a 7-0 lead at the 10:03 mark of the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Presley Egbers.

An interception by senior safety Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist) at the W&L 11-yardline thwarted a second first-quarter scoring opportunity for Macon, and Pollard tied things up with a 5-yard touchdown run at the 11:20 mark of the second quarter.

A 4-yard touchdown plunge by Egbers gave R-MC a 14-7 lead with 5:19 left in the first half, but the Generals responded at the 1:30 mark when Pollard found junior tight end Alex Vaught (Roanoke, Va. / Roanoke Catholic) with a 78-yard catch and run for a touchdown that tied the game at 14-14.

W&L took the opening kickoff of the second half and strung together an 11-play, 60-yard drive that was capped by a 32-yard field goal from sophomore placekicker Arturo Ramirez (Providence Village, Texas / Braswell), giving the Generals their first lead of the game at 17-14 with 8:15 left in the third quarter.

Randolph-Macon matched the Generals' field goal on the next series, with senior placekicker Chris Vidal knocking home a 32-yarder himself that tied the game at 17-17 with 55 seconds left in the penultimate quarter.

It looked like the Yellow Jackets had seized control when they were gifted a touchdown by the Generals at the start of the fourth quarter.  R-MC forced a punt and the snap sailed over the punter's head inside the W&L 5-yardline.  He kicked the ball out of the back of the endzone, which was a penalty for illegal touching.  Featuring a loss of down, it gave R-MC a 1st-and-goal from the 1-yardline and senior running back Justin DeLeon scored on a run one play later for a 24-17 lead at the 14:44 mark.

The Blue & White finished with 332 yards of total offense, including 202 yards on the ground.  The defense limited the Yellow Jackets to just 255 total yards.

Pollard completed 5-of-8 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown and rushed 12 times for 48 yards and one more score.  Senior running back Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion) tallied 73 yards on 11 carries and Breece finished with 70 yards on 10 carries.  Vaught caught two passes for a career-high 102 yards and one touchdown.  On defense, junior linebacker David Onyejekwe (Falls Church, Va. / McLean) led the way with 10 tackles, while Johnson posted eight stops and one interception.

Egbers completed 11-of-17 passes for 88 yards and one interception.  He also rushed 12 times for 43 yards and two touchdowns.  DeLeon amassed 89 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries and senior defensive end Tyler DeBerry led the defense with 10 tackles.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
