Generals eliminated from ODAC Tournament at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The seventh-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday, as it was swept, 2-0, in the ODAC Championship Opening Series at second-seeded Lynchburg, falling by scores of 12-8 and 12-5.
 
With game one tied, 6-6, heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Hornets (30-11) scored runs on a wild pitch, single and a sacrifice fly to gain a 9-6 advantage. After an RBI single from W&L (10-15) senior Matt Whitely (Salem, Va./Hidden Valley) in the top of the seventh, Lynchburg scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, two on a double from junior third baseman PJ Alvanos. The final W&L run came across in the top of the ninth on a solo home run from sophomore center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). 
 
After the Generals scored the game's first run in the first inning on a wild pitch, Lynchburg put three on the board in the bottom of the inning on two wild pitches and a single from Alvanos. A single in the second from first-year right fielder Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and a single in the third from Salvino tied the game, 3-3, before the Hornets scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-4 lead. 
 
Salvino drove in another run in the top of the fifth, while junior second baseman Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) and senior shortstop Jason Volpicelli (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI Catholic) plated one run each in the sixth.
 
Lynchburg scored a run in the top of the first of game two on a double from sophomore left fielder Avery Neaves, before a six-run Hornets third ballooned their lead to 7-0. Alvanos highlighted the frame with a two-run single to center.
 
The Hornets pushed their lead to 9-0 on a wild pitch and a sac fly in the fifth, before Volpicelli put W&L on the board with a single in the bottom of the fifth. After another RBI from Alvanos came in the top of the sixth, the Generals scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Salvino drove in one and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) drove in the other two runs in the seventh on a single. 
 
Lynchburg added its final two runs in the top of the eighth on singles from Neaves and Alvanos.
 
Salvino and sophomore left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) highlighted the W&L offense in game one, as both went 3-for-5, with Perkins scoring three runs and Salvino driving in three. Bassi and Whitely collected two hits each in the opener, with Bassi scoring twice. Erdmann, Salvino and Bassi each had two hits in game two, with Erdmann driving in a pair.
 
On the mound, Whitely (3-3) was the pitcher of record in game one after he allowed six runs over the final four innings. First-year left-hander Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) (1-4) started game two and surrendered six earned runs in the first 2.1 innings to take the loss.
 
Alvanos led the way for Lynchburg with two hits in both games, three RBI in game one and four RBI in game two. Neaves went 3-for-4 in game two, with three runs and two RBI, after finishing game one with one hit, two runs, an RBI and three walks. Sophomore Jack Bachmore (5-0) earned the game-one win after he allowed two earned over the final five innings and struck out six. Junior righty Brandon Pond (7-3) was the winning pitcher in game two, as he covered six innings and allowed one run and struck out nine.
