LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in the ODAC Championship quarterfinal round with a 1-0 defeat to seventh-seeded Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Generals finish their season with a 6-1-1 overall record, and it snaps a 28-game home unbeaten streak. The win improves the Maroons' overall mark to 3-1-3.
The Maroons got on the board in just the seventh minute when junior midfielder Alec Taitague flicked a pass ahead for junior midfielder Chris Jerrild. Jerrild gathered the ball, made a move to his right around a defender as he entered the box and curled a shot inside the far post for the tally.
W&L (6-1-1) held a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half, but controlled the offensive chances in the second half with a 16-2 edge in shots. The Generals' best chance at tying the score came in the 66th minute, when sophomore
Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) stepped up for a free kick from about 25 yards out. He curled his attempt around the Roanoke wall and inside the right post, but Roanoke junior keeper Zach Behe dove to his left and made the stop.
Sophomore defender
Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) also had a promising chance in the 55th minute, volleying a shot to the left post. Colby's low-liner dipped down and was heading for the low-left corner of the frame, but Behe came up with the save.
Offensively, Bass and sophomore midfielder
Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) each shot four times, as Bass put three shots on goal to one for Kutsanzira. Junior goalkeeper
Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (5-1-1) finished the game with one save in his 90 minutes of action.
For Roanoke, Jerrild finished as one of five Maroon players to take one shot in the game, totaling the team's five shots. Behe (3-0-2) made six saves in the game, five of which came in the second half to keep the Generals off the board.
The Generals earned 10 corner kicks in the game, while Roanoke took one, and W&L had six corners in the second half.
