Hudson Leads W&L Men's Lax Past Guilford, 17-10

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior attackman Austin Hudson (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) tallied a career-best eight points on four goals and four assists to lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 17-10 victory over Guilford at the Armfield Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Quakers (2-4, 2-4) scored the first two goals of the game and raced out to a 5-2 advantage with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter.  Graduate attackman Connor Sweeney scored twice for Guilford during the opening run.
 
The Generals (9-4, 8-1) swung the momentum their way late in the first quarter, scoring two goals in the final 1:53 of the frame to jump-start a six-goal run that gave W&L an 8-5 lead with 2:48 left in the second quarter. 
 
Junior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) got things started with a goal off an assist from senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) at 1:53 and sophomore attackman Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) followed with a goal of his own at 0:22 off a feed from sophomore midfielder Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien).  MacCowatt scored again to start the second quarter and the Generals were off and running.
 
Guilford scored with 1:27 left in the half to make the score 8-6 at the intermission.
 
Witherell scored back-to-back goals at 8:57 and 7:25 to give W&L a 10-6 advantage, but senior midfielder Bryce Craig scored two of the game's next three goals to pull GC within 11-8 at the 2:17 mark of the penultimate quarter.
 
Hudson then took over, scoring three times in another six-goal run by W&L that pushed the lead to 17-8 with 5:28 left in the contest. 
 
Senior attackman Derek Zacatenco scored twice in the final 4:25 for the Quakers, but they could get no closer than the seven-goal final margin.
 
Hudson led the Generals with his career day.  Witherell finished with three goals and two assists, while MacCowatt posted three goals and one assist.  Junior midfielder Braden Rhone (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) chipped in one goal and one helper.  Senior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) and junior Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) combined for nine saves in goal, with Taylor making eight stops.
 
Zacatenco logged four goals and three assists to pace Guilford.  Craig finished with three goals and one assist and senior Jack Rogers made 13 saves in goal.
 
Washington and Lee will close out the regular season on Saturday by hosting Randolph-Macon for a 2:00 pm contest.
