LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee held Shenandoah scoreless for the final 54:28 of the contest in producing a 17-1 men's lacrosse victory over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Hornets (4-5, 2-4) opened the scoring at the 9:28 mark of the first quarter when junior attackman Devon Weaver scored unassisted. SU held the 1-0 lead for nearly three minutes, before W&L senior attackman
Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) knotted the score with an unassisted goal of his own at the 6:37 mark.
The Generals (6-3, 5-1) assumed the lead (2-1) just 2:15 later when sophomore attackman
Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) found rope off an assist by senior attackman
Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) at 4:22 and W&L carried the slight advantage into the second quarter.
The Blue & White assumed control of the contest in the second period, out-shooting the Hornets 24-4 in the frame and scoring six goals. Greenspon fed junior midfielder
Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) for a goal just 18 seconds into the quarter and the Generals were off an running. Pokorny scored twice during the quarter, while Witherell totaled two goals and one assist prior to the halftime break, which saw the Generals build an 8-1 lead.
Senior attackman
Austin Hudson (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) scored twice in a four-goal third period, which gave the Generals a 12-1 lead. W&L emptied the bench in the final 20 minutes of action, seeing five more goals in the final period, which were scored by five different players.
For the game, W&L held a 59-34 advantage in shots, a 38-19 edge in ground balls and a 14-8 advantage in faceoffs.
Witherell finished with three goals and two assists, while Pokorny and Hudson scored three goals each. MacCowatt scored twice and Greenspon finished with four assists. Senior
Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played the first three quarters, making 13 stops. Junior
Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) and sophomore
Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) both saw action in the fourth period, making one save each.
A trio of goalkeepers played for the Hornets, led by first-year Mark Isabelle, who played the first 45 minutes and made 12 saves. First-year Gabe Russell and sophomore Isaac Graves played the final 15 minutes and combined for two saves.
Washington and Lee returns to play on Tuesday evening, when it hosts eighth-ranked Christopher Newport for a 7:00 pm contest.
