LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) notched her 1,000th career point, first-year guard
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) set two program records and the Washington and Lee women's basketball team set the program's single-game three-point percentage record and the program's field goals made record, as the third-seeded Generals defeated sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan, 109-67, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday at Holekamp Gym.
Malik set the program record for most field goals made without a miss and set the team's single-game three-point field goal percentage record. She finished the contest 7-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The teams were tied, 7-7, after two minutes of play, but then an 11-2 spurt over the next three minutes gave the Blue and White (5-2) an 18-9 advantage. During the run, junior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) had four points, and junior guard
Erin Addison (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) scored three.
The lead was nine points, 25-16, with 3:20 left in the first, but the Generals closed the period on 9-4 run to stretch the margin to 34-20. Horn capped the spurt with a driving layup as time expired in the stanza.
Following a jumper by senior forward Sabrina Jones, the Marlins (5-7) trailed by 16, 41-25, with 7:42 remaining in the second period. The Blue and White then scored 15 of the next 16 points to push the lead to 30 (56-26) with 4:07 left in the half. W&L made three triples during the run and made six consecutive shots to gain the sizable advantage.
The Generals carried a 33-point (66-33) margin into halftime, and then history was made on the first offensive possession of the second half, as Hughes cut to the hoop from the top of the key and dropped in a layup off a feed from Horn for the 1,000th point of her career. The W&L lead never dropped below 32 points the rest of the way, as the Blue and White cruised to the 42-point win.
Hughes made 10-of-18 from the field to total a team-high 24 points. She now has 1,012 points over her four seasons. She is the 14th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Malik registered a season-best 22 points on her perfect shooting. She broke the three-point percentage mark of .833 (5-6), which she tied earlier this season against Ferrum on February 14. The six three-pointers also tied for the fifth-most in a single game in program history.
The 7-of-7 mark from the field tied the W&L single-game percentage mark of 100 percent for Malik, but the seven makes are the highest total while making every shot.
Junior guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Horn had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Senior guard
Lynn Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) notched 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Addison had 11 points and five assists.
The Generals made 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from beyond the arc to set a new program mark. It broke the previous record of 63.2 percent (12-of-19) against Randolph on January 9, 2010. The Blue and White finished Saturday's game 42-of-74 (56.8 percent) from the field, which is the third-best single-game percentage in program history. The 42 made field goals broke the previous record of 41 set against Hollins on December 1, 2008.
The 109 points marked the second-most in program history and the most since a school-record 111 points the same game against Hollins in 2008.
First-year VWU guard S'Zahria Jones led all scorers with 25 points in the contest, while first-year forward Adaje Williams added 15 points and six rebounds.
W&L advances to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament, and will play at second-seeded Lynchburg on Tuesday. The official game time is still to be announced.
