W&L Rallies for an 8-7 Men's Lax Victory Over Roanoke

SALEM, Va. – The 18th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored the final three goals over a span of 2:54 midway through the fourth quarter to secure an 8-7 victory over Roanoke College in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium.

The Generals (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) fought back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the final period of play.  However, the Maroons (2-2, 1-1 ODAC) opened the final stanza with two goals just 23 seconds apart to assume a 7-5 advantage with 11:08 remaining.  Sophomore midfielder Bryson Miller scored off an assist by first-year attackman Luke Kammerman at the 11:31 mark for a 6-5 lead.  W&L won the ensuing faceoff, but a live ball turnover led to a transition goal by Kammerman off an assist from sophomore midfielder Ethan Caldwell for a two-goal Roanoke advantage at 11:08.

Junior midfielder Ned Mize (Henrico, Va. / Douglas Freeman) won the next faceoff and W&L began its comeback with an unassisted score by sophomore midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) at the 10:03 mark.  Senior goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) made a save on the next possession and senior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) knotted the game at 7-7 with an unassisted goal at the 8:11 mark.

Roanoke won the next faceoff, but the Generals forced a turnover in play, secured the ground ball and took their first lead of the game shortly thereafter on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) with 7:09 remaining.

Both teams had additional scoring chances, but couldn't register a goal.  A Roanoke shot hit the post with just 50 seconds remaining and Taylor posted his 15th save of the game with 38 seconds left to preserve W&L's fourth straight win over the Maroons.  The win was also W&L's program-record 23rd consecutive regular-season ODAC victory, a streak that dates back to a 15-14 loss to the Maroons on April 22, 2017.

In this game, Washington and Lee held a 43-38 edge in shots and a 31-30 advantage in ground balls.  The Generals also won 11-of-19 faceoffs and went 22-of-24 on clears.

Senior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) led W&L with three goals in the game.  Holliday tallied two goals and one assist, while Mulholland scored two goals.  Taylor played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with 15 stops.

Kammerman totaled two goals and one assist, and Caldwell finished with one goal and two assists to lead Roanoke.  Senior Matt Federau notched 17 saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes for the Maroons.

Washington and Lee will be back in action again on Wednesday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 6:00 pm contest.
