W&L Women's Golf Wins the Browngolf Intercollegiate

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team won its second tournament this week, claiming the team title at the Browngolf Intercollegiate held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines on Friday and Saturday.
 
Facing a field comprised of Division II teams, the Generals carded a two-day score of 346-322—668 (+92) to win by 15 strokes.  Host Gannon University was second with a 683 (+107) and Mercyhurst was third with a 697 (+121).  The University of Charleston was fourth (707, +131), Ashland was fifth (722, +146) and Davis & Elkins finished sixth (754, +178).
 
Gannon's Maria Arenas claimed individual medalist honors after she finished with a +16 score of 82-78—160 (+16). 
 
W&L sophomore Megan Kanaby (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) placed second overall, just one stroke behind Arenas.  She carded a two-day total of 80-81—161 (+17).
 
Junior Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) gave W&L two competitors in the top five, as she registered a +22 score of 89-77—166 (+22).  Her round of 77 on Saturday was tied for the low round of the tournament.
 
Sophomore Cassie Robinson (Emporia, Va. / Greensville County) placed 12th overall with a 90-82—172 (+28) and senior Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) placed in a tie for 13th, just two strokes behind Robinson.  She finished with an 87-87—174 (+30).
 
Sophomore Grace Owens (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) rounded out the Generals in the field, placing in a tie for 19th out of the 45 golfers in the tournament.  Owens finished with a 95-82—177 (+33).
 
Washington and Lee's next action will be on March 29-30 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
