Mulholland Carries W&L Men's Lax Past Mary Washington, 19-8

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 lead and was never seriously challenged in posting a 19-8 victory over Mary Washington in both team's season-opener on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
 
Washington and Lee (1-0) sent 19 shots towards goal in the first quarter and grabbed an early 3-0 lead on the strength of a pair of goals by senior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy).  The Eagles (0-1) got on the board with an unassisted goal by junior attackman JD Nozemack with 5:39 left in the quarter, but W&L responded with three more goals for a 6-1 advantage with 12:29 left in the second quarter. 
 
The Blue & White tallied seven goals overall in the second period, including three from senior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal).  Sophomore attackman Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) added two goals and one assist during the quarter, as the Generals carried an 11-4 lead into the halftime break.
 
W&L extended to an 11-5 lead on a man-up goal by sophomore midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) off an assist from Mulholland, but the Eagles got the upper hand for much of the quarter, out-scoring the Generals 3-1 for the remainder of the period.  Junior midfielder Kristophe Newman notched a goal and an assist in a three-goal run for UMW midway through the quarter that cut the W&L lead to 12-7 with 8:35 left in the period.
 
Mulholland scored with 1:57 remaining in the third period for a 13-7 lead heading into the fourth period.
 
UMW first-year defenseman Nathan Tunney scored in transition to make it 13-8 with 13:34 remaining in the game, but the Generals left little in doubt from there by ending the game with six straight goals scored by six different players.
 
W&L held a 60-30 edge in shots and a 38-24 advantage in ground balls.  The Generals also won 19-of-30 faceoffs and finished 22-of-23 on clears.
 
Mulholland led the offense with a career-best five points on a career-high four goals and one assist.  Greenspon totaled a career-high four goals and Pokorny finished with a career highs for points (5), goals (3) and assists (2).  Junior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Delbarton) added one goal and two helpers.
 
Defensively, sophomore Harris Hubbard (Daniel Island, S.C. / Bishop England) posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior goalkeeper Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) logged 10 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.
 
Nozemack led Mary Washington with two goals and one assist.  Sophomore attackman Ethan Castleman chipped in two goals as well.  Sophomore Riley Green played the duration in goal and stopped 19 shots.
