LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) connected on the game-winning three-pointer with 11 seconds left, tying her career high of 22 points, to lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team in a 69-68 comeback win over Shenandoah on Thursday night in Holekamp Gym.
Trailing 68-66, the Generals (4-1, 3-1 ODAC) got a stop on defense and called a timeout with 28 seconds remaining in the game. W&L executed crisp ball movement on the ensuing possession, ending with first-year forward
Grace O'Connor (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) finding Horn on the near wing for the winning three-point jumper with just 11 seconds left.
Both teams then exchanged one turnover each, giving Shenandoah the ball on the offensive end of the floor with under four seconds remaining, but the Generals' defense came up with one final stop to secure the victory.
The Generals trailed by five entering the fourth quarter, but a three from Horn and a layup from senior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) tied the score, 51-51, a minute into the frame. Back-to-back three-pointers from the Hornets were countered by back-to-back triples from Horn and O'Connor to keep the Generals within striking distance down the stretch.
Shenandoah led by a point heading into the third quarter, and tied its largest lead in the game (eight points) with 3:22 remaining in the frame. However, the Generals pulled back to within five points, courtesy of a three-pointer from senior guard
Lynn Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School).
The Generals held a 9-5 lead early in the game, before the Hornets went on a 12-3 run to grab a 17-12 advantage with two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Sophomore guard
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) helped inch W&L closer when she split a pair of free throws and then splashed a three-pointer before the end of the first.
The Hornets' defense turned up the pressure in the second quarter, limiting the Generals to just three points over the first five minutes, while pushing their lead to 27-19. Over the last five minutes of the period, W&L was led on a 13-4 run by Horn and junior guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Horn scored seven points during the run, while Groninger scored the other six, including her second triple of the first half just six seconds before the buzzer.
Horn scored 13 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, and she shot 9-of-17 overall, including 4-of-7 from long range, and added five rebounds and five assists. Hughes pitched in with 13 points, going 9-of-11 on foul shots, and added four rebounds and three steals, while Groninger tallied 12 points.
With her 13 points, Hughes now needs just 24 more points to become the 14th player in W&L women's basketball history to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone.
Shenandoah first-year guard Madisen Kimble scored a team-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor, 5-of-8 from long distance, and she had five rebounds. St. Cyr finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, and junior forward Sarah Sondrol tallied 15 points and five boards.
For the game, the Generals shot 37.5 percent (21-56) overall, but made 8-of-16 shots (.500) in the fourth quarter, while going 11-of-26 (.423) from beyond the arc and 16-of-21 (.762) from the free throw line in the game. The Hornets shot 42.4 percent (28-66), including 44.4 percent (8-18) from distance, but were limited to just 4-of-6 (.667) from the foul line.
W&L held the points off turnovers (16-7) and bench points (10-4) advantages in the contest, while Shenandoah outscored W&L in the paint (34-12) and on second-chance points (11-2).
