LEXINGTON, Va. – In the team's first ever game in the new Richard L. Duchossois Athletics and Recreation Center and Holekamp Gym, the Washington and Lee women's basketball team put on a high-powered offensive performance in a 103-80 win over Ferrum on Sunday afternoon.
The 103 points scored by the Generals marked the second-most points scored in program history, trailing the 2008-09 team's 111-point effort in a win over Hollins. W&L also shot 57.1 percent (36-63) from the field in the game, which was good for the third-best single-game field goal percentage in program history.
In addition, first-year guard
Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) helped the Generals build up a 20-point first half lead, as she went 4-for-4 from long range across the first two quarters and finished the game 5-for-6 on three-point shots to tie the program's single-game record for three-point field goal percentage (.833). Her effort also led the team to a new program record for made three-point shots in a single game, as the team went 15-of-30 (.500) from behind the arc, the highest single-game percentage since going 12-of-23 (.522) in the on February 23, 2019, against Roanoke in the ODAC semifinals.
The teams were even at 12-12 through the first six minutes of the contest, but the Generals (2-1, 2-1 ODAC) then used a 11-1 run to build up a 10-point advantage. After a Ferrum (1-5, 1-5 ODAC) three pointer closed the first quarter (23-16), the Generals steadily pulled away in the second, using a 7-0 run to open the quarter, followed by an 8-0 spurt mid-quarter. By halftime, the Generals had built up a 54-34 lead.
W&L continued to grow its lead in the third and bridged a 12-0 run across the end of the third quarter through the start of the fourth to go up 84-55 at the 7:52 mark. The Generals led by as many as 36 points in the fourth (98-62), before Ferrum scored 18 of the final 23 points in the contest.
Malik finished the game tying senior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) at 17 points for the team high. Hughes' 17 points came on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor, and she added four rebounds. Junior guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pingry School) tallied 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting (2-of-4 from three), and totaled seven rebounds and seven assists. Junior guards
Jordan Diehl (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) and
Erin Addison (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Blue and White, as Diehl finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, to 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for Addison.
For the Panthers, sophomore forward Cameron Hawkins scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Aisha Martin scored 21 points and added five boards, while sophomore guard Kayla Cabiness and first-year guard Brogan Dudley both scored 11 points.
The Generals' defense held the Panthers to 26-of-68 shooting (.382) overall in the game, including just 8-of-32 (.250) from beyond the arc. Ferrum edged the Generals in free throws, however, going 20-of-29 from the line to W&L's 16-of-28 effort. The Panthers also held a 9-8 edge in second-chance points, while the Generals scored more points in the paint (38-32) and more bench points (42-13).
The Generals will continue action next Thursday, February 25, when they welcome Shenandoah to campus for a 7:00 pm ODAC tip-off.
