W&L Men's Basketball Handles Lynchburg, 69-47, in Team's First Game in Holekamp Gym

LEXINGTON, Va. — In its first game in the Richard L. Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center, the Washington and Lee men's basketball team never trailed on its way to a 69-47 victory against Lynchburg in Holekamp Gym on Sunday evening.

From the opening tip, the Generals (1-1, 1-1 ODAC) handled the Hornets (3-2, 2-2 ODAC), scoring the game's first 11 points. Junior guard Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) started the run with a three-pointer, followed by a triple from sophomore guard Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg). Manigault was then fouled on a three-point attempt, draining all three from the foul line, and a layup by first-year forward Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor High School) put W&L up 11-0 with 15:55 left in the half.

A made jumper by Lynchburg only momentarily stalled the onslaught, as a layup by junior guard Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Spire Academy), and three straight layups by senior forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) gave the Blue and White a 21-2 advantage just eight minutes into the half.

The Generals eventually extended the lead to 37-11 at the 3:40 mark on a triple by Mitchell, before a 10-4 run by the Hornets to close the half trimmed the lead to 20 (41-21). W&L went cold to start the second, and after a 10-4 run by Lynchburg the margin was down to 45-31 with 13:24 remaining in the contest.

W&L answered with a jumper by Lamendola, a three-pointer by Manigault and a layup by d'Entremont to extend the advantage back to 21 (52-31) with 11:29 on the clock. The Blue and White's lead never dropped below 19 points the rest of the way en route to the 22-point victory.

Mitchell was dominate for the Generals for the second straight game with a game-high 19 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, a game-high four assists and two blocks, with 17 of the points and nine of the rebounds coming in the opening half. Manigualt added 11 points and d'Entremont contributed 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

W&L shot 41.4 percent (30-of-73) from the field, while Lynchburg was held to just 18-of-59 (30.5 percent) from the floor. The Hornets also made just 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from the foul line.

Senior forward William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) notched six points and nine rebounds. He now has 973 points in his career and needs just 27 more to become the 28th player in program history to reach 1,000.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
